Pair your Wear OS watch with the Wear OS by Google app

Wear OS watches pair to a phone through the "Wear OS by Google" app (or a manufacturer's companion app on some devices), which drives the setup flow and later controls notification access, tile choices, and app installs.

What you should know

  • Install "Wear OS by Google" from the Play Store on your Android phone before turning on the watch.
  • On the watch, follow the on-screen prompts until it shows a pairing code or QR code.
  • In the phone app, tap "Set up new watch" and either scan the code or confirm the matching pairing number shown on both screens.
  • Grant the requested permissions (notifications, contacts, location, physical activity) when prompted — these unlock notification mirroring, contacts on the watch, and GPS-assisted workouts.
  • Wait for the initial sync to finish before disconnecting — this is when your Google account, watch face, and installed apps first transfer to the watch.

Keep the phone's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi both on and the watch within a few feet of the phone for the entire setup — pairing that's interrupted partway through often has to be restarted from scratch.

Why it matters

Nearly everything else on a Wear OS watch — notifications, app installs, tile configuration, backups — depends on this initial pairing being healthy, so problems with any of those often trace back to a shaky or incomplete pairing rather than the feature itself.

Best practices

  • Use the same Google account on the watch and phone so app purchases, contacts, and settings stay in sync.
  • Keep the Wear OS app updated on the phone — Google ships pairing and sync fixes through app updates more often than watch firmware updates.
  • Finish setup on a strong Wi-Fi connection so the watch can download its initial app and tile data quickly.

Common problems and fixes

Watch gets stuck on the pairing code screen
Restart Bluetooth on the phone (toggle it off and on), then restart the watch and reopen the pairing flow in the Wear OS app.
Watch shows "disconnected" days after a successful pairing
Open the Wear OS app → your watch's tile at the top → check Bluetooth is on for both devices, and confirm the watch isn't within range of a second phone it was previously paired to.

Tips and tricks

  • If you're switching phones, use "Forget this device" in the Wear OS app on the old phone before pairing to the new one — otherwise the watch can keep trying to reconnect to the old phone in the background.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Wear OS watch pair with an iPhone?

Some Wear OS watches support a limited iOS companion app, but most notification, tile, and app-management features are Android-only — pairing and full functionality are designed around the Wear OS by Google Android app.
