Control which app notifications reach your watch
Wear OS mirrors your phone's notifications by default, but per-app notification access, bridging, and diagnostic-uninterrupted (Do Not Disturb) behavior are all managed separately from the phone's own notification settings.
What you should know
- In the Wear OS app on the phone: Notifications → toggle apps individually, or turn off "Sync notifications from your phone" entirely.
- On the watch: swipe down → Settings → Notifications → App notifications to allow or block individual apps directly on the watch.
- Dismissing a notification on the watch also clears it from the phone by default; toggle "Bridge notifications" off in the Wear OS app if you want them handled independently.
- Turn on Theater Mode or Do Not Disturb from the quick-settings tray to silence notifications and dim the display without powering the watch off.
Why it matters
Unfiltered notification mirroring is the single biggest cause of watch-buzzing fatigue — most people end up disabling far more apps on the watch than they ever would on the phone, and knowing where that control lives prevents constant wrist interruptions.
Best practices
- Turn off notifications for high-volume, low-priority apps (social feeds, games) on the watch specifically, while keeping them on for messaging and calendar.
- Use scheduled Do Not Disturb (bedtime hours) rather than manually toggling it, so it's consistent without daily upkeep.
- Review notification access after installing any new watch app — some request it by default and it's easy to miss during install.
Common problems and fixes
- Notifications appear on the phone but never reach the watch
- Check both layers: Wear OS app → Notifications for that app, and on-watch Settings → Notifications → App notifications — an app blocked in either place won't reach the watch.
- Dismissing on the watch doesn't clear it from the phone
- Confirm "Bridge notifications" is enabled in the Wear OS app; some third-party apps also don't support two-way dismissal regardless of this setting.
Tips and tricks
- A firm long-press-and-hold gesture on an incoming notification card lets you mute that app directly from the watch without digging into settings.
Frequently asked questions
Will silencing my phone also silence the watch?
No — phone-side Do Not Disturb and the watch's own Do Not Disturb/Theater Mode are independent, so you may need to enable both if you want a fully quiet setup.

- Pairing with PhoneWear OS watches pair to a phone through the "Wear OS by Google" app (or a manufacturer's companion app on some devices), which drives the setup flow and later controls notification access, tile choices, and app installs.
- Watch Faces & TilesWatch faces control the main display and its complications, while tiles are the swipeable panels (weather, heart rate, calendar, and more) that sit to the left and right of the watch face for quick glances without opening an app.
