Keep your watch's Wear OS version and Play system updates current
Wear OS ships two separate layers of updates — the OS/build itself and Google Play system updates — both delivered directly over Wi-Fi to the watch, independent of your phone's own software version.
What you should know
- On the watch: swipe down from the watch face, then Settings → System → System updates → check for updates.
- Separately check Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Play system update for security patches delivered outside full OS updates.
- Keep the watch on Wi-Fi and above roughly 30% battery, ideally on the charger, before starting a download.
- The watch restarts automatically once an update finishes installing.
Do not remove the watch from its charger or let Bluetooth/Wi-Fi drop mid-install — an interrupted update can leave the watch stuck on a boot screen requiring a factory reset to recover.
Why it matters
OS updates on Wear OS frequently fix battery-drain regressions, sensor-accuracy bugs, and Bluetooth reconnection issues — a watch running an old build is a common, overlooked cause of problems that look like hardware failures but disappear after updating.
Best practices
- Check for updates the same day you unbox a new watch — retail stock often ships with an older build than what's currently available.
- Update overnight while charging so a mid-update battery drop is never a risk.
- Restart the watch after a major update if a tile or watch face looks visually glitchy — that's usually a stale rendering cache, not a failed install.
Common problems and fixes
- Update download stalls at a fixed percentage
- Confirm the watch is on Wi-Fi (not just Bluetooth-tethered to the phone) — most OS updates download over Wi-Fi directly and won't progress on Bluetooth alone.
- "No updates available" despite a known newer version existing
- Updates roll out gradually by region and model; force a re-check after restarting the watch, or wait — there's no manual override to pull a not-yet-rolled-out build.
Tips and tricks
- Current build number and Android security patch level are both visible under Settings → System → About, useful when a support thread references a specific fixed version.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my phone nearby to update the watch?
No — Wear OS system updates download directly to the watch over Wi-Fi; the phone only needs to be nearby for the very first pairing, not for later OS updates.

- Pairing with PhoneWear OS watches pair to a phone through the "Wear OS by Google" app (or a manufacturer's companion app on some devices), which drives the setup flow and later controls notification access, tile choices, and app installs.
- Battery SaverWear OS offers a tiered approach to power saving — Battery Saver mode that turns off always-on display and background sync, plus a deeper Watch Battery Saver mode on some models that limits the watch to time and basic sensors only.
