Customize your watch face and swipe-through tiles

Watch faces control the main display and its complications, while tiles are the swipeable panels (weather, heart rate, calendar, and more) that sit to the left and right of the watch face for quick glances without opening an app.

What you should know

  • Long-press the watch face on the display, or swipe down → Settings → Display → Watch face, to browse and switch faces.
  • Tap the pencil/edit icon on a selected face to customize its complications, color, and style.
  • Swipe left or right from the watch face to reach tiles; long-press the current tile and tap the "+" or arrows to add, remove, and reorder them.
  • Tiles can also be added and reordered from the phone in the Wear OS app under Watch face → Tiles.

Why it matters

Complications and tiles are the fastest way to surface the information you actually check often — weather, next event, steps — without opening a full app, so a well-set-up face and tile set materially cuts down daily taps.

Best practices

  • Limit active tiles to the handful you check daily — too many makes the swipe-through list slower to navigate.
  • Pick complications that map to apps you already use (calendar, fitness, weather) rather than defaults that don't reflect your routine.
  • Preview a new watch face in both light and dark ambient states before committing — some complications are harder to read in always-on display mode.

Common problems and fixes

A downloaded watch face doesn't appear on the watch
Confirm the companion app for that face is installed and synced to the watch from the phone's Play Store, then check Settings → Display → Watch face again.
A tile shows outdated or blank data
Swipe to the tile and wait a few seconds for a background refresh, or reopen the source app once so it can push fresh data to the tile.

Tips and tricks

  • Third-party watch faces installed from the Play Store on the phone sync to the watch automatically — no need to install anything directly on the watch itself.

Frequently asked questions

How many tiles can I add?

There's no strict published limit, but Google recommends keeping only frequently-used tiles active since each one adds to the swipe list you scroll through.
