Keep SteamOS current on your Deck
SteamOS updates ship security fixes, Proton/compatibility improvements, and new Quick Access features. Many newly released games expect a recent SteamOS build before they'll launch or patch correctly.
What you should know
- STEAM button > Settings > System > Software Updates shows the current build and lets you Check for Updates.
- The Update Channel (Stable, Beta, Preview) is set in the same System tab — Stable is recommended unless you're testing new features.
- Downloads happen over Wi-Fi in the background; a full OS update can be several gigabytes, so a strong connection matters.
- The Deck reboots automatically once an update finishes downloading and verifying.
Don't hold the power button to force a shutdown while 'Installing update...' is shown on screen — interrupting this step can corrupt the system partition and require a recovery reimage.
Why it matters
Valve ties compatibility layer (Proton) updates, controller firmware, and battery/thermal tuning to SteamOS releases, so an outdated system is one of the most common causes of games crashing on launch or running worse than they should.
Best practices
- Check for updates before starting a long play session, not mid-session, since an update can force a reboot.
- Stay on the Stable channel for a daily-driver Deck; only switch to Beta if you're comfortable troubleshooting occasional regressions.
- Update while plugged into power — a large OS update draining the battery to empty can interrupt the install.
Common problems and fixes
- Update stuck at 'Downloading' for a long time
- Check Quick Settings > Wi-Fi signal strength; move closer to the router or switch to a less congested 5GHz network and retry.
- Deck boots to a black screen or repair menu after an update
- Hold Volume Down + Power to enter the boot menu and select 'Restart into Recovery', then use 'Reinstall SteamOS' from the recovery Repair/Reinstall options — this rewrites the OS partitions without touching your microSD library.
Tips and tricks
- The build number and channel are also shown on the same System page — screenshot it before contacting Steam Support so the exact version is on hand.
Frequently asked questions
Will updating erase my installed games?
No — SteamOS updates only touch the system partition; games and their saves on internal storage or microSD are untouched.
Related settings
- Wi-Fi & BluetoothThe Deck's Wi-Fi drives every download and update, and Bluetooth is how you pair headphones, controllers, and keyboards. Both live in the same Quick Settings panel for fast access without leaving your game.
- Storage: Internal & microSDThe Deck's internal SSD/eMMC fills up fast with modern game sizes, and a microSD card is the standard way to expand storage. SteamOS treats a properly formatted card as a first-class install location.
