Manage internal storage and a microSD expansion card
The Deck's internal SSD/eMMC fills up fast with modern game sizes, and a microSD card is the standard way to expand storage. SteamOS treats a properly formatted card as a first-class install location.
What you should know
- STEAM button > Settings > Storage shows internal storage usage broken down by game, and any inserted microSD card as a second drive.
- Insert a microSD card in the top slot; SteamOS will prompt to format it for game storage the first time it's detected.
- From the Library, select a game > the ••• menu > Move to choose between internal storage and the microSD card without a full reinstall.
- The Downloads settings page lets you set the default install location for new game installs.
Use a high-endurance, high-speed (A2-rated UHS-I or better) microSD card — slow or low-endurance cards cause noticeably longer load times and can wear out faster under constant game read/write.
Why it matters
Running out of storage mid-download is one of the most common Deck frustrations, and understanding Move versus reinstall saves significant time and mobile data when juggling a large library on limited internal space.
Best practices
- Reserve internal storage for the games you play most often, and use microSD for a larger backlog you dip into occasionally.
- Periodically check Storage settings for orphaned shader cache or compatibility data left behind by uninstalled games.
- Safely eject the microSD card from Quick Settings before removing it to avoid corrupting data mid-write.
Common problems and fixes
- microSD card isn't recognized or shows as read-only
- Re-seat the card, then try reformatting it for Steam Deck storage from Settings > Storage — a card previously formatted for a camera or Switch often needs reformatting first.
- Moving a game between drives seems stuck
- Let it run — large games can take a long time to move depending on card speed; avoid interrupting it, and check available free space on the destination first if it fails.
Tips and tricks
- Shader pre-caching data can be cleared separately from game data in Storage settings if space is tight and you're willing to accept a one-time shader compilation stutter.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move my microSD card to another Steam Deck?
Yes — a card formatted by one Deck will mount and work on another Deck without reformatting.
