Adjust screen refresh rate, resolution, and color
The Deck's built-in display supports a variable refresh rate up to 90Hz on OLED models (60Hz on the original LCD model) and can output at other resolutions when docked to an external display.
What you should know
- STEAM button > Settings > Display has a Refresh Rate slider — lowering it below the max reduces power draw with little visible impact outside fast-paced games.
- Resolution and scaling filter (FSR, Linear, Nearest) options appear when the Deck is docked and outputting to an external monitor or TV.
- OLED models add extra Display options for color vibrance/contrast and an always-on-display-style dimming behavior.
- Per-game refresh rate can also be capped from the Quick Access Performance tab alongside frame rate limit for combined battery savings.
Why it matters
Refresh rate and output scaling directly affect both battery life and how sharp or blurry a docked setup looks, and getting the resolution/scaling filter wrong when docked is a common cause of a blurry or stretched image on a TV.
Best practices
- Match refresh rate to the frame rate limit you've set for a game — a 90Hz screen showing a 40 FPS-capped game gains nothing and just wastes battery.
- Use FSR scaling filter when docked and running below the TV's native resolution for a sharper image than simple bilinear scaling.
- Enable OLED contrast/vibrance adjustments gradually — pushing them too high can crush shadow detail in dark scenes.
Common problems and fixes
- Docked output is blurry or the wrong aspect ratio
- In Display settings, set the output resolution to match the TV/monitor's native resolution and switch the scaling filter to FSR or Integer instead of the default stretch.
- Screen flickers at lower refresh rates
- Nudge the refresh rate slider up slightly — some panels have a narrow band near the minimum where flicker is more noticeable, especially on the LCD model.
Tips and tricks
- Half Rate Shading (Quick Access Performance tab, OLED models) pairs well with a lowered refresh rate for the biggest combined battery gain in less demanding games.
Frequently asked questions
Does the OLED model's higher refresh rate use more battery?
Yes, at 90Hz versus 60Hz — but you can still cap it lower per game from the same Display settings if you'd rather prioritize battery life.

- Battery & Performance SettingsThe Quick Access Performance overlay lets you cap the chip's power draw (TDP), lock the frame rate, and adjust GPU clock per game — the fastest way to trade graphics performance for longer battery life and a cooler, quieter Deck.
- Desktop ModeUnderneath the console-style Game Mode UI, the Deck runs a full KDE Plasma desktop. Desktop Mode is where you install non-Steam apps, manage files, connect peripherals like a mouse and keyboard, and change lower-level system settings.
