Switch to the full Linux desktop for apps and file management
Underneath the console-style Game Mode UI, the Deck runs a full KDE Plasma desktop. Desktop Mode is where you install non-Steam apps, manage files, connect peripherals like a mouse and keyboard, and change lower-level system settings.
What you should know
- STEAM button > Power > Switch to Desktop exits Game Mode and loads the Plasma desktop.
- A Bluetooth or USB mouse and keyboard make Desktop Mode much easier to use, though it's fully navigable with the trackpads and touchscreen.
- The Discover app store lets you install desktop Linux applications; Konsole gives terminal access for advanced users.
- Return to the game-focused interface via the Steam icon in the taskbar or the desktop's Power menu > 'Return to Gaming Mode'.
Changes made outside the Steam client in Desktop Mode (system packages, file system edits) aren't covered by Valve's standard support and can be undone by a SteamOS reset — keep a note of anything you customize.
Why it matters
Desktop Mode is what turns the Deck from a game console into a general-purpose Linux PC — it's required for installing other game launchers, emulators, browsers, and productivity apps, and for any deeper troubleshooting that Game Mode's simplified UI doesn't expose.
Best practices
- Pair a mouse and keyboard before your first Desktop Mode visit — it's dramatically faster than touchscreen/trackpad navigation for file management.
- Use Discover (not random downloaded scripts) to install desktop apps whenever a Discover listing exists, for easier future updates.
- Return to Gaming Mode fully before docking for a TV session — some apps left open in Desktop Mode can keep running in the background and drain battery.
Common problems and fixes
- Desktop Mode feels sluggish or fonts look tiny
- Right-click the desktop > Display Configuration and raise the scale to 150-200% — Plasma's default scaling assumes a larger screen than the Deck's display.
- Can't get back to Gaming Mode
- Click the Steam icon in the taskbar, or use the desktop Application Launcher > Power > Return to Gaming Mode; a full reboot also lands back in Gaming Mode by default.
Tips and tricks
- Konsole plus the built-in package manager is how most emulator front-ends and alternative launchers get installed — search community guides for the specific app before installing from an unfamiliar source.
Frequently asked questions
Can Desktop Mode damage the Deck if I'm not careful?
It's unlikely for normal use, but system-level changes made in the terminal can require a SteamOS reinstall to fully undo — stick to Discover and well-documented guides.
Related settings
- Controller Configuration (Steam Input)Steam Input is the layer that lets you remap the Deck's built-in controls per game, create custom layouts, and enable extras like gyro aiming or trackpad-as-mouse — without the game itself needing native support.
- Storage: Internal & microSDThe Deck's internal SSD/eMMC fills up fast with modern game sizes, and a microSD card is the standard way to expand storage. SteamOS treats a properly formatted card as a first-class install location.
