Tune TDP limit and frame rate limit for battery life and heat

The Quick Access Performance overlay lets you cap the chip's power draw (TDP), lock the frame rate, and adjust GPU clock per game — the fastest way to trade graphics performance for longer battery life and a cooler, quieter Deck.

What you should know

  • Press ... (Quick Access), select the battery/performance tab, and toggle 'Advanced View' to reveal TDP Limit, GPU Clock, and Frame Rate Limit sliders.
  • TDP Limit caps the APU's total power draw in watts — lowering it (e.g. from 15W to 8-10W) extends battery life at the cost of frame rate.
  • Frame Rate Limit combined with Half Rate Shading (on OLED models) can cut power draw substantially in less demanding games with minimal visual impact.
  • These settings are saved per-game, so a low-power setup for a 2D indie title won't carry over and cripple a demanding 3D game.
  • General power behavior — sleep timer, screen-off timer, and the battery percentage/time-remaining display — is under STEAM button > Settings > Power.

Frame Rate Limit only reduces power draw effectively when paired with Vsync or Half Rate Shading — capping FPS alone without those can still leave the GPU running near full tilt between frames.

Why it matters

The Deck's battery is small relative to its hardware, and an unconstrained TDP is the single biggest factor separating a 1.5-hour session from a 4+ hour one — most players get meaningfully more playtime just by dialing in these three sliders once per game.

Best practices

  • Start a new game at a mid TDP (around 10W) and adjust up or down based on observed battery drain and frame pacing.
  • Enable the FPS and battery-wattage overlay (same Performance tab) so you can see the real effect of a change instead of guessing.
  • Lower the screen's refresh rate alongside TDP for compounding battery savings on less demanding games.

Common problems and fixes

Deck runs hot and fans spin loudly even in menus
Cap the frame rate limit (e.g. to 30 or 40 FPS) in menu-heavy or turn-based games — uncapped frame rates in simple scenes waste power on frames you won't notice.
Battery percentage drops much faster than expected
Check that Advanced View TDP wasn't left at a high setting from a previous demanding game, and confirm screen brightness isn't maxed — brightness and TDP are the two biggest battery draws.

Tips and tricks

  • Community TDP presets on ProtonDB or Steam Deck subreddits for specific games are a fast starting point instead of tuning from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

Does lowering TDP shorten the Deck's hardware lifespan?

No — running cooler and drawing less power is generally easier on the hardware, not harder; there's no lifespan penalty to a lower TDP limit.
