Route audio to the TV speakers, a soundbar, or Bluetooth
Sound Out controls where the TV sends its audio — built-in speakers, an optical or HDMI-ARC soundbar, or a paired Bluetooth speaker or headphones.
What you should know
- Go to Settings (gear icon) > All Settings > Sound > Sound Out and choose TV Speaker, Optical, Audio Out (Line Out), HDMI ARC, or Bluetooth.
- For a soundbar or AV receiver connected to the HDMI ARC/eARC port, select TV Speaker (LG Sound Sync) or HDMI ARC to enable one-remote volume control.
- To connect wireless headphones or a Bluetooth speaker, choose Bluetooth, then Add New Device and select it from the scan list.
- Enable SIMPLINK under Settings > General > Devices so the TV remote can control volume and power on a connected LG soundbar automatically.
Bluetooth audio can add a noticeable delay (audio/video sync lag), which is more apparent on live sports or fast-paced games than on movies.
Why it matters
Getting Sound Out wrong is one of the most common reasons a connected soundbar appears to "not work" — the TV is often still routing audio to its own speakers instead of the external device.
Best practices
- Use HDMI ARC/eARC over optical when available — it supports higher-quality formats like Dolby Atmos passthrough.
- Turn on SIMPLINK/HDMI-CEC for LG soundbars so one remote controls both volume and power.
- Re-scan for Bluetooth devices if a previously paired speaker doesn't reconnect automatically after a TV update.
Common problems and fixes
- No sound from a connected soundbar
- Confirm Sound Out is set to HDMI ARC or Optical (matching the physical cable used) rather than TV Speaker.
- Audio is out of sync with video over Bluetooth
- Switch to a wired HDMI ARC or optical connection for latency-sensitive content — Bluetooth audio delay isn't fully adjustable on most models.
Tips and tricks
- The AV Sync option under Sound > Advanced Settings can shift audio timing by small increments if a wired soundbar still sounds slightly out of sync.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send audio to two devices at once, like a soundbar and headphones?
No — webOS supports one active Sound Out destination at a time, though some models allow simultaneous TV speaker and Bluetooth output.
