Keep your TV's webOS software current
LG pushes webOS updates that patch security vulnerabilities, fix app crashes, and add new Home Dashboard features. Some apps, including LG Channels and streaming apps, will refuse to launch on an outdated build.
What you should know
- Press the Settings (gear icon) button on the Magic Remote, then go to All Settings > General > About This TV > Check for Updates.
- If an update is found, select Download and confirm — the TV can keep running other apps in the background while it downloads.
- Enable Allow Automatic Updates in the same screen so future updates install overnight without manual checks.
- A stable internet connection is required; updates over a weak Wi-Fi signal can time out and need to be restarted.
Do not unplug the TV or remove power during an update — interrupting an install can corrupt the firmware and require a factory reset or service visit.
Why it matters
Streaming apps and LG Channels frequently require a minimum webOS version to launch at all, so falling behind on updates can silently break apps you use every day until you update anyway.
Best practices
- Turn on Allow Automatic Updates so patches install during idle hours instead of interrupting viewing.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection or a strong Wi-Fi signal for large updates to avoid failed downloads.
- Check for updates after setting up a new streaming app if it won't open — an outdated webOS build is a common cause.
Common problems and fixes
- Update download stalls or fails repeatedly
- Power the TV off at the wall for 60 seconds, reconnect, and retry from All Settings > General > About This TV — a soft reset clears most stuck downloads.
- "No update available" but the TV feels outdated
- Confirm the TV's date and time are correct under Settings > General > Date & Time, since an incorrect clock can block the update server check.
Tips and tricks
- The build number and webOS version shown under About This TV is worth noting before contacting LG support — they'll usually ask for it first.
Frequently asked questions
Will updating erase my installed apps and settings?
No — webOS updates install in place and preserve your apps, accounts, and picture settings.
