Pair, re-pair, or adjust the Magic Remote's on-screen pointer

The Magic Remote connects to the TV over RF (not infrared), which lets it control the on-screen pointer, voice search, and scroll wheel from any angle in the room.

What you should know

  • Point the Magic Remote at the TV and press and hold the Wheel (OK) button for about 5 seconds until the on-screen pairing confirmation appears.
  • If the pointer stops responding, remove the batteries for 5 seconds, reinsert them, point the remote at the TV, and press OK to re-pair.
  • Adjust pointer speed and size under Settings (gear icon) > All Settings > General > Devices > Magic Remote.
  • If the pointer feels intrusive, press the Wheel (OK) button once during normal use to hide it and switch to directional navigation.

Why it matters

The Magic Remote is the primary way to navigate webOS, launch voice search, and use the pointer for scrubbing video — a remote that's lost its pairing can make the TV feel unusable until it's fixed, which takes under a minute.

Best practices

  • Keep spare batteries on hand — a low battery is the most common cause of pointer lag or dropped pairing.
  • Re-pair the remote after replacing its batteries, even if it seems to still respond, to avoid intermittent input drops.

Common problems and fixes

Remote controls the pointer but buttons don't respond
Re-pair by removing the batteries for 5 seconds, reinserting, and holding OK while pointed at the TV.
Pointer drifts or moves erratically
Lower the pointer speed under Settings > General > Devices > Magic Remote, and keep the remote at least a few feet from other RF devices.

Tips and tricks

  • Holding the microphone button on the Magic Remote activates voice search from any screen, including inside most streaming apps.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a regular universal remote instead of the Magic Remote?

Basic navigation works with an IR universal remote, but pointer control, scroll-wheel scrubbing, and voice search require the Magic Remote's RF pairing.
