Control Automation and Shortcut Permissions

Shortcuts app settings manage which shortcuts can run without confirmation, Siri suggestions for automations, sharing permissions, and access to sensitive apps and data used inside shortcuts.

How to open Shortcuts App Settings

  1. Open Settings → Shortcuts
  2. Toggle Allow Untrusted Shortcuts if needed
  3. Open the Shortcuts app → Automation tab to review triggers
  4. Tap a shortcut's settings to review its app and data permissions
  5. Adjust or delete automations that are no longer needed

What you should know

  • Allow Untrusted Shortcuts controls whether shortcuts from outside the App Store can run
  • Personal Automations can trigger based on time, location, app launch, or device events
  • Siri suggests shortcuts based on usage patterns for quick access
  • Individual app permissions (Contacts, Photos, etc.) can be reviewed per shortcut

Why it matters

Shortcuts is Apple's automation engine, letting users chain actions across apps to save repetitive taps, and its settings are the main safeguard against running unreviewed automations that could access sensitive data or perform unwanted actions. Because shortcuts can read Contacts, Photos, and other private data, controlling permissions per shortcut is a meaningful privacy boundary. Personal Automations extend this further into background triggers, so understanding what's set to run silently matters for both convenience and control.

Best practices

  • Review shortcuts from third-party sources before running them, especially ones requesting broad data access
  • Use Personal Automations sparingly for truly repetitive, predictable triggers to avoid unexpected background actions
  • Periodically audit which apps and data types installed shortcuts can access
  • Keep 'Allow Untrusted Shortcuts' off unless intentionally installing from a trusted external source

Common problems and fixes

A downloaded shortcut won't run
Enable Allow Untrusted Shortcuts under Settings > Shortcuts if it's from outside the Shortcuts gallery/App Store
An automation runs at unexpected times
Review its trigger conditions under the Automation tab in the Shortcuts app and adjust or delete it
A shortcut is denied access to an app's data
Grant the specific permission when prompted, or review it under Settings > Privacy & Security

Tips and tricks

  • Add frequently used shortcuts to the Home Screen or widgets for one-tap access
  • Use Personal Automations with Focus modes to trigger app or setting changes automatically
