Set Up Wallet and Apple Pay on iPhone
Wallet & Apple Pay settings let you add debit, credit, and transit cards for contactless payment, manage boarding passes and IDs, and control which card is used by default along with Face ID or Touch ID authorization.
How to open Wallet & Apple Pay
- Open Settings → Wallet & Apple Pay (or open the Wallet app directly).
- Tap the '+' button and choose 'Debit or Credit Card'.
- Scan the card with the camera or enter its details manually, then verify with your card issuer.
- Set your preferred Default Card and confirm Face ID/Touch ID is enabled for Apple Pay.
What you should know
- Cards can be added by scanning them with the camera or entering details manually, subject to your card issuer's approval.
- A default card is used automatically for Apple Pay unless you select a different one at the moment of payment.
- Express Transit Cards can be used to tap through certain transit systems without unlocking the iPhone or authenticating first.
- Apple Cash (where available) and person-to-person payments sent through Messages are also managed from this same section.
If your iPhone is lost or stolen, use Find My or contact your card issuer promptly — Apple Pay transactions still require device authentication, but suspending cards remotely adds an extra layer of protection.
Why it matters
Apple Pay replaces handing over a physical card with a tokenized, authenticated transaction, meaning your actual card number is never shared with the merchant and every purchase requires Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. This setting is also where Express Transit is configured, letting people move through certain subway or transit gates without unlocking their phone at all, which only works correctly if set up in advance. Because Wallet increasingly holds boarding passes, tickets, and IDs alongside payment cards, this section has become a central hub for everyday essentials well beyond just paying for things.
Best practices
- Set a default card that matches the one you actually want charged most often, since it's used automatically unless you manually select another during checkout.
- Enable Face ID or Touch ID specifically for Apple Pay so purchases stay protected even if your general passcode is compromised in some other way.
- Set up Express Transit for your city's supported transit system in advance, rather than discovering at the turnstile that authentication is required.
- Remove old or canceled cards from Wallet promptly to avoid confusion when selecting a payment method during checkout.
- Contact your card issuer immediately if your iPhone is lost, in addition to using Find My, since they can suspend the tokenized card independently.
Common problems and fixes
- A card won't add to Wallet or gets stuck on verification
- Confirm the card issuer supports Apple Pay and try re-entering the details manually instead of scanning, or contact the card issuer directly if verification keeps failing.
- The wrong card gets charged during a tap-to-pay purchase
- Check which card is set as Default under Wallet & Apple Pay, and manually select the correct card in Wallet before tapping to pay if a different one is needed for that purchase.
- Express Transit doesn't work at the turnstile without unlocking the phone
- Confirm the specific card was set up as an Express Transit Card for your transit system, since only cards explicitly configured this way skip the authentication requirement.
- Apple Pay declines at checkout despite the card working elsewhere
- Check for a temporary hold from the card issuer, confirm the device's date and time are accurate, and try restarting the iPhone if the terminal still doesn't recognize the tap.
Tips and tricks
- Double-click the side button from the Lock Screen to bring up your default Apple Pay card instantly without fully unlocking or opening the Wallet app.
- Long-press a card in Wallet to quickly access its transaction history or card-specific settings without going through Settings.
Frequently asked questions
Does Apple Pay share my actual card number with stores?
No, Apple Pay uses a unique tokenized device account number instead of your real card number, so merchants never see or store your actual card details.
What happens to my cards in Wallet if I lose my iPhone?
You can use Find My to suspend Apple Pay on the missing device remotely, and your card issuer can also freeze or reissue the card independently for extra protection.
Can I use Apple Pay without an internet connection?
Yes, in-store contactless Apple Pay transactions work over NFC and don't require an active internet connection on the iPhone itself.
