Configure iMessage, SMS, and Filtering Options
Messages settings control iMessage activation, SMS/MMS relay from a Mac or iPad, read receipts, filtering for unknown senders, and how long messages are kept before expiring.
How to open Messages Settings
- Open Settings → Messages
- Toggle iMessage on and configure Send & Receive addresses
- Enable Filter Unknown Senders under the Unknown & Spam section
- Set Keep Messages under Message History
- Turn on Text Message Forwarding for other Apple devices if needed
What you should know
- iMessage toggle enables encrypted messaging over data instead of SMS/MMS
- Text Message Forwarding relays SMS to other Apple devices on the same account
- Filter Unknown Senders separates messages from non-contacts into a filtered list
- Expire settings can auto-delete messages after 30 days, 1 year, or keep forever
Why it matters
Messages is the primary communication channel for most iPhone users, so its settings directly shape both privacy and daily convenience—whether read receipts reveal when you've seen a text, whether spam and scam texts clutter the main inbox, and whether old conversations quietly consume storage. Filtering unknown senders in particular has become more important as SMS phishing has increased, giving users a first line of defense without blocking legitimate contacts outright.
Best practices
- Enable Filter Unknown Senders to reduce exposure to SMS phishing and spam
- Turn off read receipts for contacts where you'd rather not confirm you've seen a message
- Set message expiration to 1 year if storage is a concern, keeping recent history intact
- Enable Text Message Forwarding if you regularly message from a Mac or iPad
Common problems and fixes
- Green bubbles appear instead of blue for a known iPhone contact
- Confirm iMessage is enabled for that contact's number and both devices have a data connection
- SMS isn't relaying to iPad or Mac
- Check Text Message Forwarding under Settings > Messages and ensure the other device is signed into the same Apple ID
- Legitimate messages land in the filtered/unknown list
- Add the sender to Contacts so future messages route to the main list
Tips and tricks
- Use Filters in the Messages app to separate Unknown Senders, Transactions, and Promotions automatically
- Pin important conversations to the top for quick access
