Control App Access to Camera, Microphone & Location

The Privacy & Security hub lets you review and control exactly which apps can access your Camera, Microphone, Location Services, Contacts, Photos, and more.

How often: Do a full permissions review every couple of months, and immediately after installing any new app that requests sensitive access.

How to open Privacy & Permissions

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security.
  2. Select a category (e.g. Camera or Microphone).
  3. Review which apps have access and toggle any off as needed.

What you should know

  • An orange dot in the status bar means the microphone is currently in use; a green dot means the camera is.
  • Location Services can be set per app to Never, Ask Next Time, While Using, or Always.
  • App Privacy Report shows how often apps have accessed sensitive data and contacted other domains.
  • Tapping any category (like Camera) lists every app that has requested that permission.

Denying location access to navigation or delivery apps will prevent core features like turn-by-turn directions from working.

Why it matters

Apps can quietly request access to your camera, microphone, precise location, contacts, and photo library, and without regular review those permissions tend to accumulate far beyond what's actually needed. Location and microphone access in particular can be used for tracking or advertising purposes well beyond the feature you originally granted them for. Reviewing this hub regularly is one of the highest-leverage privacy habits on iPhone because it directly controls what data leaves your device.

Best practices

  • Set location access to 'While Using the App' instead of 'Always' unless a feature genuinely requires background location, like Find My or a delivery app.
  • Review the App Privacy Report every few weeks to see which apps are actually using the permissions you granted and how often.
  • Restrict Photos access to 'Selected Photos' for apps that don't need your entire library, rather than granting full access by default.
  • Pay attention to the orange and green status bar dots — they indicate live microphone or camera use and are worth investigating if they appear unexpectedly.

Common problems and fixes

A navigation or delivery app stops working correctly after location access is restricted
Set that specific app's location permission back to 'While Using the App' or 'Always' rather than 'Never', since core navigation features depend on it.
Green or orange dot appears in the status bar with no obvious app open
Open Control Center to see which app is listed as recently using the camera or microphone, and check that app's individual permissions if it's unfamiliar.
An app keeps re-requesting a permission you already denied
This is normal behavior for some apps on relaunch; if it becomes intrusive, review the app's settings directly rather than repeatedly dismissing the system prompt.
Photos access shows 'Limited' and an app can't see images you just took
Go to that app's Photos permission and add the new photos to its selected access, or switch it to 'All Photos' if you trust the app.

Tips and tricks

  • Tap the 'i' info icon next to an app's location setting to see a small map preview of the precision level it's currently allowed.
  • Turn off 'Precise Location' for apps like weather or shopping that only need your general area, keeping exact GPS coordinates private.
  • Use App Privacy Report's 'Network Contacts' view to spot apps quietly communicating with third-party domains you don't recognize.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 'While Using the App' and 'Always' for location?

'While Using the App' only shares location when the app is open and active, while 'Always' allows background location access even when the app is closed, which is rarely necessary outside of navigation, fitness tracking, or Find My-style apps.

Does turning off Microphone access for an app break voice features entirely?

Yes, an app cannot process any audio input without microphone permission, so voice memos, voice search, or calling features within that specific app will stop functioning until access is restored.

Can I see which apps have accessed my location recently?

Yes, Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services shows a recent indicator next to any app that has used your location in the last 24 hours.
