Manage a Family Member's Apple Cash and Card
Apple Cash Family lets an organizer set up Apple Cash for a family member under 18, issue a virtual or physical debit card, fund their balance, and monitor or limit their transactions.
How to open Apple Cash & Family Payments
- Open Settings → tap your name → Family Sharing
- Select the family member and tap Apple Cash
- Tap Set Up Apple Cash and follow the prompts
- Add funds and configure notifications
- Order a physical card if needed from the family member's Wallet app
What you should know
- Organizer can send money instantly to a family member's Apple Cash balance
- Transaction notifications and spending limits can be configured for teens
- A physical Apple Cash Family Card can be ordered for in-store use
- Family members' cards can be locked remotely from the organizer's device
Why it matters
Apple Cash Family gives parents a controlled way to introduce children to digital payments with real oversight, rather than handing over an unrestricted debit card. Because transactions and balances are visible to the organizer, it functions as a teaching tool for budgeting while still letting kids make independent purchases, send money to friends, or get paid back for shared expenses. The remote lock feature also adds a safety net if a device is lost.
Best practices
- Set spending notifications so both organizer and family member see activity in real time
- Start with small, replenishable balances rather than large lump sums
- Use the physical card for in-person purchases where Apple Pay isn't accepted
- Review transaction history together periodically as a budgeting conversation
Common problems and fixes

- Confirm they're part of Family Sharing and meet the age requirement for their region
- Card payments are declining

- Money sent isn't appearing
- Confirm both parties are signed into iCloud and check for pending identity verification
Tips and tricks
- Use Apple Cash requests among family members to settle shared expenses like groceries or rides
- Pair with Screen Time reports to discuss both spending and app usage habits together
