Turn individual sync categories on or off per account
Beyond the master account sync switch, each added account has granular toggles for what actually syncs, such as Contacts, Calendar, Gmail, Drive, or Photos, letting you keep some data local-only while syncing the rest.
How to open Sync Individual Account Data
- Open Settings
- Tap Passwords & accounts
- Select the account to manage
- Tap Account sync
- Toggle individual data types on or off
What you should know
- Toggles appear per account, per data type (Contacts, Calendar, etc.)
- Disabling a toggle stops future sync without deleting already-downloaded data
- A manual 'Sync now' option forces an immediate refresh
- Useful for keeping a secondary account's calendar out of the main calendar app view
Why it matters
Not every account should sync every data type, especially when a device carries both personal and work or secondary accounts; syncing everything can clutter the calendar with irrelevant events or merge contact lists in confusing ways. Granular sync controls let users keep accounts logically separated, for example syncing a work account's email but not its contacts into the personal phone contact list, which matters for privacy and organization on shared or dual-use devices.
Best practices
- Disable Contacts sync for accounts you don't want merged into your main contact list
- Turn off Calendar sync for secondary accounts whose events would clutter the primary view
- Use manual sync sparingly since it can drain battery if triggered too often
- Recheck sync toggles after major app updates, since new data types sometimes get added
Common problems and fixes
- Calendar shows duplicate or unwanted events
- Disable Calendar sync for the extra account or hide that specific calendar within the Calendar app
- Contacts merged unexpectedly across accounts
- Turn off Contacts sync for the account you don't want merged and manually clean up duplicates
- Sync toggle reverts after a restart
- Check for a device management profile that may be enforcing sync settings
Tips and tricks
- Use per-type sync toggles instead of removing an entire account when you only want to change one category
- Force a manual sync right after changing a toggle to confirm the change took effect
Frequently asked questions
Does disabling sync delete data already on the device?
No, it only stops future updates; existing synced data remains until manually removed.
Can I sync Photos separately from other Google data?
Yes, Google Photos backup has its own toggle independent of Contacts and Calendar sync.
