Back up photos, app data, and device settings to the cloud
This setting controls the automatic cloud backup of app data, call history, device settings, and photos to your Google Account, optionally using additional Google One storage, so everything can be restored when setting up a new device.
How to open Google One / Device Backup
- Open Settings
- Tap Google, then Backup
- Toggle Backup by Google One on
- Review backup account and storage usage
- Tap Back up now for an immediate manual backup
What you should know
- Backs up app data, call log, contacts, and device settings automatically
- Photo and video backup is managed separately through Google Photos
- Backup status and storage usage are visible from this menu
- Restoring a backup happens automatically during new device setup
Why it matters
Losing, upgrading, or resetting a phone without a working backup means losing app configurations, call history, and settings that took months to build up, even if photos are separately safe. Regular backups turn a potentially painful device migration into a near-automatic process, restoring most of the previous phone's setup within minutes of signing into the new one.
Best practices
- Confirm backup is enabled and connected to Wi-Fi periodically, since it usually only runs on Wi-Fi and while charging
- Check available Google Account storage, since a full account can silently stop new backups
- Manually trigger a backup before major events like an OS update or trade-in
- Verify the backup completed successfully before wiping an old device
Common problems and fixes
- Backup shows as never completed
- Ensure the device is connected to Wi-Fi and charging, since cellular backup is usually disabled by default
- Storage is full and backup is failing
- Free up Google Account storage or purchase additional Google One storage
- New device is missing app data after restore
- Confirm the correct Google Account was chosen during setup and that the backup for that account completed before switching devices
Tips and tricks
- Turn on Wi-Fi-only backup restrictions to avoid unexpected cellular data usage
- Use the 'Back up now' manual option right before selling or recycling an old phone
Frequently asked questions
Does this back up my photos too?
Photos are backed up separately through the Google Photos app's own backup setting, though both draw from the same Google Account storage.
Is a Google One subscription required to back up my device?
No, a free storage tier is included with every Google Account; a subscription only adds more space.
Can I back up more than one device to the same account?
Yes, each device's backup is stored separately even under the same account.
