Choose the service that fills passwords and forms

The Autofill Service setting selects which app, such as Google Password Manager or a third-party password manager, automatically fills in saved passwords, addresses, and payment details across apps and browsers.

How to open Autofill Service

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Passwords, passkeys & accounts (or System > Languages & input > Advanced)
  3. Tap Autofill service
  4. Choose the desired autofill provider
  5. Confirm and review saved entries within that provider

What you should know

  • Supports Google's built-in Password Manager or any installed compatible autofill app
  • Applies system-wide, including inside third-party apps, not just Chrome
  • Can be limited to only fill passwords, or also addresses and payment methods
  • Autofill suggestions can be reviewed and deleted per saved entry

Why it matters

A consistent, system-wide autofill service reduces password reuse and typing errors by suggesting strong saved credentials directly inside login forms, whether in a browser or a native app. Choosing a dedicated password manager as the autofill service, rather than relying on individual apps to remember credentials inconsistently, is one of the simplest ways to improve both security and daily convenience.

Best practices

  • Pick one autofill service and stick with it rather than switching frequently, which can cause missing suggestions
  • Periodically review and remove outdated saved passwords or addresses
  • Enable biometric confirmation for autofill on sensitive apps like banking if the service supports it
  • Export or back up passwords through the manager's own backup feature as a safety net

Common problems and fixes

Autofill does not trigger inside an app
Confirm the app's login field supports Android's autofill framework and that the correct service is selected in Settings
Wrong account's credentials are suggested
Review saved entries in the autofill service and delete duplicates or mismatched entries
Autofill service keeps resetting to default
Check for a device policy or another app requesting to become the default autofill handler

Tips and tricks

  • Use the autofill service's built-in password health check to find reused or weak passwords
  • Enable payment method autofill for faster checkout in shopping apps

Frequently asked questions

Is autofill data encrypted?

Reputable autofill services, including Google Password Manager, encrypt stored credentials both locally and in transit.

Can I use two different autofill services at once?

No, Android allows only one active autofill service at a time.

Does autofill work in all apps?

Only apps built with standard Android input fields that support the autofill framework; some custom-built login screens may not.
