Travel Savings Checklist: Hotels, Flights, Rail and Parks
Most travel savings come from timing and comparing, not secret codes. This checklist covers what to check before you book, and what you are owed when a flight goes wrong.

Flights
- Search with flexible dates and nearby airports. Fare alerts usually save more than any discount.
- Compare the total with bags and seat fees, not the headline fare.
- Read the change and refund rules of the cheapest fare before you buy it.
Hotels
- Compare the public rate, the hotel's own member rate and any membership rate for the same dates.
- Check resort or destination fees and parking, which can change which hotel is cheapest.
- Prefer a rate you can cancel when plans might change; non-refundable savings vanish if you cannot go.
Rail, parks and attractions
Rail operators such as Amtrak publish discounts for some travelers, including seniors and children, on many routes; check the fare rules. For US national parks and federal recreation sites, the America the Beautiful passes can beat paying entrance fees if you visit several times. Buy passes from the official source.
Know your refund rights on US flights
The US Department of Transportation explains when airlines must give a refund, for example when a flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel. Read its refunds page before accepting a voucher instead of your money back.
