How to Find and Ask for Senior Discounts
Most senior discounts are not advertised. They sit with the venue, the location or a membership, and they are not always the cheapest price. The habit that pays is simple: ask, then compare.

Where senior discounts usually are
Senior and 50+ pricing tends to cluster in a few places: travel (hotels, rail, rental cars, national parks), entertainment (cinemas, museums, theaters), dining and some retailers with a set senior day. The age a discount starts at differs from one company, and often one location, to the next.
Many restaurant and retail chains are run by franchise owners, so the same brand can offer a discount in one town and not in the next. A company's website is a starting point, not the final word.
How to ask without it being awkward
- Ask before you pay: "Do you have a senior or membership rate?" works at a box office, a hotel desk and a register.
- When booking online, look for a rate type or promo field labeled senior, 50+ or membership, and read the fare or rate rules before you choose it.
- Carry the ID or membership card the discount asks for. Some places check, and the discount usually cannot be added afterwards.
Check that the discount is really the best price
A senior rate is a different rate, not always a lower one. Hotels often have public sales, loyalty-member prices or package deals that beat it, and senior fares can carry stricter change or refund rules.
- Compare the senior rate with the public price and any loyalty or app price for the same dates.
- Read what the cheaper rate gives up: refunds, changes, included breakfast or parking.
- Pick the lowest total for what you actually need.
Federal recreation: the Senior Pass
US citizens and permanent residents aged 62 or older can buy the America the Beautiful Senior Pass, which covers entrance fees at national parks and many other federal recreation sites. Buy it from the National Park Service, a federal site or the official online store, not from a reseller, and check the current price and options on the NPS passes page.
