Watch out for job scams
Real employers never charge you to apply. Walk away if you see any of these:
- You are asked to pay for training, equipment, a background check or an application fee.
- They send a check and ask you to buy equipment from their vendor or send part of it back.
- The 'job' is receiving money into your account, or packages at home, and forwarding them.
- You get an offer without a real phone or video interview, often after a chat-only exchange.

Job sites and tools: frequently asked questions
What is the best free job site in the US?
There is no single best site. Large boards such as Indeed and LinkedIn cover the most industries, USAJOBS is the official source for federal jobs, state job banks list local public and private openings, and specialist boards are better for fields such as tech, healthcare, higher education and nonprofits. Use two or three that fit your field.
Are government job sites free to use?
Yes. USAJOBS, CareerOneStop and state job banks are free. No one needs to pay to apply for a government job; offers to sell access to federal jobs are scams.
Does AltFTool partner with these job sites?
No. We list them because they are well known or official, not because of any payment or partnership. Inclusion does not mean we vouch for every posting on them, so verify each employer.
Are the AltFTool career tools free?
Yes. The resume, cover letter, interview, salary and scam-check tools are free, need no sign-up, and run in your browser.
