Sales & Marketing Jobs in the USA
Sales and marketing jobs bring in customers and revenue, and they exist in almost every company. On the sales side, sales development representatives (SDRs) book meetings, account executives close deals, and account managers grow existing customers; retail and inside sales roles are common entry points. Marketing covers content and copywriting, search engine optimization, paid advertising, email, social media, product marketing, events and public relations, plus marketing operations and analytics roles that manage tools and measure results. Many sales roles pay a base salary plus commission, so ask how quotas are set, what share of the team hits them, and when commission is paid. Marketing employers increasingly expect comfort with data and AI writing tools, but clear writing and a real understanding of the customer still separate strong candidates. Be cautious with commission-only offers that ask you to buy inventory or recruit others: that structure often points to multi-level marketing rather than an employer.

Sales & Marketing pay: how to check what a job pays
Sales pay often combines base salary and commission, so total earnings vary with performance; ask for the on-target earnings (OTE) and how it is calculated. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook covers sales and marketing occupations, and pay transparency laws in several states require a base range in the posting.

Watch out for job scams
Real employers never charge you to apply. Walk away if you see any of these:
- You are asked to pay for training, equipment, a background check or an application fee.
- They send a check and ask you to buy equipment from their vendor or send part of it back.
- The 'job' is receiving money into your account, or packages at home, and forwarding them.
- You get an offer without a real phone or video interview, often after a chat-only exchange.
Sales & Marketing jobs: frequently asked questions
What is OTE in a sales job posting?
OTE means on-target earnings: base salary plus the commission you would earn by hitting 100% of quota. Ask what percentage of the team actually reaches quota, because OTE is a target, not a guarantee.
How do I get an entry-level marketing job?
Build a small portfolio: writing samples, a social account you grew, a simple website with SEO you improved, or a campaign you ran for a club or small business. Marketing coordinator and assistant roles are common first jobs.
Are commission-only sales jobs legitimate?
Some are, often in real estate, insurance or independent sales. Be cautious if the role requires you to buy starter kits or inventory, pay for training, or recruit other people, which are signs of multi-level marketing. The FTC publishes guidance on business opportunity and MLM claims.
Are there remote sales and marketing jobs?
Yes. Inside sales, SDR, content, SEO and marketing operations roles are often remote or hybrid. Field sales and retail roles are location-based.
