APK vs Play Store: what is different?
By AltFTool Team · Updated 1 Nov 2026
Play Store apps and APK installs are the same kind of app underneath. Google Play just handles download, review and updates for you.
Side by side
| Google Play | APK from the developer | |
|---|---|---|
| Updates | Automatic | Manual: install the new APK over the old one |
| Review | Google reviews and scans | Play Protect scans on install; you check the source |
| Account | Google account needed | No account needed |
| Availability | Depends on country and device | Any Android phone that meets the minimum version |
| Verification | Handled by Play | SHA-256 and signing certificate on the app page |
When an APK makes sense
- The app is not on Google Play yet (true for AltFTool apps today).
- Your phone has no Google Play, for example some Huawei phones or custom ROMs.
- You manage devices for a school or office and install apps directly.
Questions
Can I move an APK-installed app to Play updates later?
Only if the Play version is signed with the same key. Otherwise uninstall the APK version first; app data may be lost unless the app backs it up.
