AltFTool vs Convertio

Convertio's free limits are worth reading carefully, because their own pages disagree: the help centre says 1 GB per file and 10 credits per 24 hours, while the Terms of Use still describe 100 MB and 10 conversion minutes. Either way there is a daily window, and OCR is capped at ten pages. AltFTool has no window because there is no conversion server. The tradeoff is coverage: Convertio advertises more than 25,600 conversions across 300+ formats, and most of those are formats a browser has no decoder for.

Convertio's free tier, in their own words

  • Convertio's help centre states the free tier allows up to 1 GB per file, 10 conversion credits per 24 hours, and 10 concurrently launched conversions (support.convertio.co, checked 2026-07-25)
  • Convertio's own Terms of Use still describes a stricter free tier - 'maximum of 100 MB single file size, a maximum of 2 concurrent conversions, a maximum of 10 conversion minutes within a 24-hour period' - so the two vendor pages disagree
  • Free OCR (text recognition) is limited to a maximum of 10 recognised pages per the Terms of Use
  • Free API use is capped at 25 file conversions within a 24-hour period per the Terms of Use
  • Ad-free pages are listed as a paid-plan feature, so free users see ads
  • Uploaded input files are deleted instantly after conversion; output files are deleted after 24 hours (or immediately if you click 'X')

Paid pricing: Lite US$11.99/month billed monthly (US$6.99/month billed yearly); Basic US$22.99/month; Pro US$44.99/month; Custom from US$54/month

What Convertio does better

Plenty of people should keep paying for Convertio, and these are the reasons why.

  • Exceptionally wide catalogue - Convertio advertises 'more than 25600 different conversions between more than 300 different file formats', covering long-tail formats a client-side tool simply has no decoder for.
  • Files are processed and stored in the European Union, input files are wiped instantly after conversion, and the retention rules are written plainly in the privacy policy - a reasonable answer for people who must use a server converter but care about jurisdiction.
  • Paid tiers scale well past what a browser can hold in memory: up to 10 GB files with unlimited concurrent conversions on Pro, 20 GB on Custom, plus server-side OCR for scanned documents.

And what AltFTool does not do

  • 300+ formats and 25,600 conversion pairs is not a number we approach. Long-tail formats need server-side decoders.
  • No OCR at all — Convertio gives ten free recognised pages and much more on paid plans.
  • No EU-processing guarantee to point a compliance officer at, because there is no processing on our side to guarantee.

Questions people actually ask

Which Convertio free limit is correct?
Their pages disagree, so plan for the stricter one. The help centre lists 1 GB per file and 10 credits per 24 hours; the Terms of Use still say 100 MB and 10 conversion minutes per 24 hours.
Does AltFTool have a daily conversion limit?
No. Conversions run in your browser, so there is no credit window to reset and no queue you are waiting in.
Can AltFTool OCR a scanned document?
No. Convertio's free tier gives you ten recognised pages, which for a single scanned letter is usually enough, and paid plans go much further.
