This guide converts an Indian wedding card's finished (folded) size into everything a press needs: the flat artwork size after the fold is opened out, the document size with 3 mm bleed on each edge, the safe margin, the envelope internal size, and stepped insert dimensions. It also computes weight from GSM, because grams per square metre times area in square metres is exactly the sheet weight, so you can price courier and postage before printing. 6 x 9 inches (152.4 x 228.6 mm) folded is the size most Indian card printers treat as standard for a folder invitation, with 5 x 7 in used for save-the-dates and 9 x 12 in for premium box cards. Sizes are quoted in inches in the trade even though paper is bought in GSM and press sheets are metric.
3 mm on every edge is the standard, so a 152.4 x 228.6 mm folded bi-fold card printed as a 304.8 x 228.6 mm flat sheet needs a 310.8 x 234.6 mm document. Keep text and motifs at least 5 mm inside the trim, and more on the fold side if the card is scored rather than creased.
Main folders are usually 250-350 GSM, inserts 150-250 GSM, envelopes 120-180 GSM and vellum overlays 90-120 GSM. Higher GSM feels more premium but adds weight: a 300 GSM 6 x 9 in bi-fold card alone is about 21 g before inserts and envelope.
Weight in grams equals the sheet area in square metres multiplied by the GSM, added up across the card, every insert and the envelope. A 6 x 9 in bi-fold at 300 GSM with one 250 GSM insert and a 120 GSM envelope comes to roughly 39 g, so 200 invitations weigh about 7.9 kg. Confirm the final figure on a scale with a sample before booking postage.
