About this tool
Open ZIP files in your browser: browse folders, preview text and images, download single files, re-zip a selection or create a new ZIP.
This online ZIP extractor opens .zip archives directly in your browser. It reads the archive's central directory to list every file with its size, compressed size, space saved and date, then decompresses only the files you open using the browser's built-in Deflate decoder, checking each one against its stored CRC-32. You can preview text, code and images, download single files, extract everything into a folder on supported browsers, or tick a selection and save it as a new ZIP. A second tab packs your own files and folders into a ZIP. Nothing is uploaded: the archive never leaves your device.
Open Unzip Files Online on AltFTool — it loads instantly in your browser.
In the Unzip tab, drop a .zip file (or a ZIP-based .docx, .xlsx, .epub, .apk or .jar) onto the box or press Choose ZIP file.
Browse the folder tree: Expand all opens every folder, Search file names filters by path, and each row shows Size, Packed, Saved % and Modified date.
Click a file name to open the Preview panel with text, images or a hex dump plus its CRC-32 status, then press Download file to save it.
Tick checkboxes and press Download as ZIP or Extract selected to folder; in the Create ZIP tab, add files or a folder, name the archive and press Create ZIP.
The archive is read with the File API on your device. No file, name or byte is sent to a server, which matters for contracts, payroll exports and personal photos.
The central directory is parsed from the end of the file, and individual entries are sliced out on demand, so a large archive opens quickly without loading it all into memory.
Every extracted file is verified against its CRC-32. Paths containing “..”, absolute paths or drive letters are rewritten so a malicious archive cannot write outside the folder you choose.
Re-pack a selection as a new ZIP, or create one from dropped files and folders with optional Deflate compression and the original folder structure.
| Method | ID | Supported here | Typical source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stored | 0 | Yes | Already-compressed files, re-zips |
| Deflate | 8 | Yes | Windows, macOS, Linux zip, most apps |
| Deflate64 | 9 | No | Windows Explorer for files over 2 GB |
| BZIP2 | 12 | No | Info-ZIP with -Z bzip2 |
| LZMA | 14 | No | 7-Zip in ZIP mode |
| Zstandard | 93 | No | Recent archivers, optional |
| AES encryption | 99 | No (listed only) | Password-protected archives |
Deflate decoding uses the browser's built-in DecompressionStream, available in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
Open the file in this page with Choose ZIP file or by dragging it onto the drop area. The archive is read by JavaScript running in your browser, so it is never uploaded. You can then preview entries, download single files, or save a selection as a new ZIP. Closing the tab discards everything.
Opening a ZIP here only lists and decompresses data; nothing inside it is executed. This tool also rewrites dangerous paths, such as names containing “..” or a drive letter, so extracted files cannot land outside the folder you pick. Files you download can still be harmful, so scan executables before running them.
No. Encrypted entries, whether legacy ZipCrypto or AES, are detected and listed with a lock icon, but they cannot be decrypted here. Use a desktop archiver that prompts for the password. Unencrypted files in the same archive can still be previewed and extracted normally.
Stored (no compression) and Deflate, which together cover almost all ZIP files made by Windows, macOS, Linux and most apps. Entries compressed with BZIP2, LZMA, Zstandard, PPMd or Deflate64 are listed and marked as unsupported because browsers have no decoder for them. RAR and 7z are different formats and are not opened here.
There is no fixed limit. The file list is read from the end of the archive, so even multi-gigabyte ZIPs open quickly, and ZIP64 archives are supported. Each file you extract has to fit in browser memory; previews are limited to files under 50 MB, and very large re-zips may fail on phones with little RAM.
Yes, in Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers. Press Extract all to folder, choose a destination and grant access, and every file is written with its original folder structure. Browsers without the File System Access API can download single files or save the contents as a new ZIP instead.
Switch to the Create ZIP tab, drop files or use Add a folder to keep the folder structure, type a name and press Create ZIP. With Compress (Deflate) on, each file is compressed only if that makes it smaller; already-compressed files such as JPEG or MP4 are stored as they are.
Older archivers stored names in a legacy code page instead of UTF-8 and did not mark which one. When the UTF-8 flag is missing, this tool decodes names as IBM code page 437, the ZIP default, and also reads the Info-ZIP Unicode path field when present. Archives created with a regional code page can still show odd characters.
Each file in a ZIP carries a CRC-32 checksum of its original contents. After decompressing, this tool recomputes the checksum and compares it. A match means the file came out exactly as it went in; a mismatch means the archive is damaged, for example by an interrupted download.
Yes. Those formats are ZIP archives with a fixed internal layout, so you can browse their XML, images and resources, preview them and download individual parts. This is handy for recovering embedded images from a Word document or inspecting an app package.
