Many countries require your passport to stay valid for at least six months beyond the date you intend to leave their territory, not the date you arrive. It applies across most of South-East Asia, the Gulf, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the UAE, Egypt and Kenya among others, and airlines enforce it at check-in because they are fined for carrying a passenger who is refused entry.
Two conditions apply together under Article 6(1)(a) of the Schengen Borders Code: valid for at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen area, and issued within the previous ten years. The ten-year rule catches older passports that were extended past ten years by adding months at renewal — those are refused even when the expiry date looks fine.
The passport, visa, boarding pass, prescription medicine letter, arrival and customs forms, and any cash. Checked bags are unreachable from the moment of bag drop until baggage claim, which spans every checkpoint that asks for identity documents. Keep those on your person or in the cabin bag and use the folder only for supporting paperwork.
Keep printed copies of the itinerary, boarding pass, visa and accommodation confirmation. Immigration officers in several countries will not accept a phone screen for the address on a landing card, airport Wi-Fi frequently fails at exactly the moment you need to open a booking, and a flat battery at the gate is the most common reason a mobile boarding pass has to be reissued.
