About this tool
Build the proofs, photos and witness list for marriage registration, with Special Marriage Act notice dates worked out.
The Marriage Registration Document Checklist assembles the exact proofs, photographs, affidavits and witnesses a registrar in India asks for, based on which Act you register under and the circumstances of the couple. It applies the statutory minimum ages — 21 for the groom and 18 for the bride under section 5(iii) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and section 4(c) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954 — and for a civil marriage it dates the 30-day objection window under section 7 and the three-month deadline in section 14 of the Special Marriage Act.

Twenty-one years for the man and eighteen for the woman. Section 5(iii) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, section 4(c) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954 and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 all use those figures, measured as completed years on the date of the marriage.

Three under section 12 of the Special Marriage Act. State rules under section 8 of the Hindu Marriage Act generally ask for two or three, and Christian and Parsi marriages are witnessed by two. Every witness must attend in person with identity and address proof.
A valid passport and visa, copies of every stamped page, proof of the required stay in India, and a no-impediment or single status certificate from that person's embassy or high commission.
