About this tool
Customary tipping amounts in India for restaurants, autos, hotels, drivers and guides, with the CCPA service-charge rule and GST handled.
This calculator applies India's two tipping conventions to an actual itinerary: roughly 10% of the food-and-drink subtotal before GST in a sit-down restaurant, and fixed rupee amounts per bag, per night, per ride, per delivery or per guiding day everywhere else. It also separates a tip from a service charge, which the Central Consumer Protection Authority's guidelines of 4 July 2022 say a hotel or restaurant cannot add to your bill automatically or by default. You get a trip total, a per-person share, a daily figure and a note-by-note cash plan.

Fixed tips are rounded to sensible notes and the day's total is broken into Rs 10, 20, 50 and 100 notes.
About 10% of the pre-GST subtotal in a sit-down restaurant is the common city norm, with 5% at the modest end and 15% for genuinely good service. Fixed cash tips run around Rs 20-100 per bag for a bellhop, Rs 50-200 per night for housekeeping, Rs 200-500 a day for a hired driver and Rs 300-1,000 a day for a licensed guide covering the whole party.
No. The CCPA guidelines dated 4 July 2022 state that hotels and restaurants shall not add a service charge automatically or by default to the food bill, shall not collect it under another name, and shall not make service conditional on paying it. You can ask for it to be removed before paying, and a complaint can be made to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
Rounding the metered auto fare up to the next Rs 10 is the usual gesture, and nothing extra is expected on a negotiated fare agreed in advance. App cab fares are fixed, so a tip of Rs 20-50 is a courtesy rather than an expectation, most often given for luggage help, a long wait or a difficult route.
Before. GST at 5% for standard restaurants, or 18% where the restaurant sits in a hotel with a declared room tariff above the specified threshold, is tax collected for the government and no part of it reaches staff. Tipping on the grand total quietly adds a tip on the tax as well.
