About this tool
Pick random letters A–Z, vowels or consonants, or Hindi, Greek and Russian letters, with exclusions, no repeats, history and a timer for letter games.
This Random Letter Generator picks letters fairly from the English alphabet, Hindi Devanagari vowels and consonants, Greek or Russian Cyrillic. Each pick uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with rejection sampling, so every letter in the pool has exactly the same chance. Narrow the pool to vowels or consonants, choose upper case, lower case or both, and exclude any letters you do not want. Draw one letter or up to 500, with or without repeats, and copy or download them. The big display shows the letter's name, such as the NATO word or Greek name. A letter round timer picks a new letter each round for category word games. Nothing is sent to a server.
Open Random Letter Generator on AltFTool — it loads instantly in your browser.
In Settings, choose an Alphabet such as English (A–Z) or Hindi (Devanagari), then pick All, Vowels or Consonants and UPPER, lower or Both case.
Type letters to Exclude (or press Skip hard to drop Q U V X Y Z), set How many letters from 1 to 500 and tick No repeats if needed.
Press Generate or the Space bar to draw, then Copy the letters with your chosen Separator or download them as a .txt file.
For a word game, open Letter round timer, pick a round length such as 1.5m, press Start round and use Next round when the beep sounds.
Letters are chosen with crypto.getRandomValues and rejection sampling, which removes the small bias that a simple remainder would add.
English A–Z, Hindi vowels and consonants (with optional अं अः and conjuncts), the 24 Greek letters and the 33 Russian letters.
Vowels or consonants only, Y as a vowel, upper, lower or mixed case, excluded letters, no repeats, and 1 to 500 letters per draw.
A letter round timer with 30-second to 3-minute rounds, no repeated letters across rounds, an end beep and full-screen mode.
| Alphabet | Letters | Vowels | Consonants |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 26 | 5 (A E I O U), or 6 with Y | 21 (20 with Y as a vowel) |
| Hindi (Devanagari) | 44 (49 with extras) | 11 स्वर (+ अं अः) | 33 व्यंजन (+ क्ष त्र ज्ञ) |
| Greek | 24 | 7 (Α Ε Η Ι Ο Υ Ω) | 17 |
| Russian (Cyrillic) | 33 | 10 (А Е Ё И О У Ы Э Ю Я) | 21, plus signs Ъ and Ь |
With Both case selected, cased alphabets double the pool, e.g. 52 for English.
It builds a list of the letters you allow, then picks a position in that list at random. This tool uses your browser's cryptographic random source and rejection sampling, so each letter has an equal chance of 1 in the pool size. For all 26 English letters, that is about 3.85% each.
Yes. Simply taking a random number modulo 26 makes a few letters very slightly more likely. Rejection sampling discards the small range of random values that would cause that bias and draws again, so every letter in the pool has exactly the same probability.
Yes. Tick No repeats and the letters are drawn without replacement using a shuffle, like pulling tiles from a bag. You can draw at most as many unique letters as there are in the pool, for example 26 for English or 21 if you choose consonants only.
In English, A, E, I, O and U are vowels and the other 21 letters are consonants. Y can act as a vowel in words like gym, so there is an option to count it as one. Greek has seven vowels and Russian has ten vowel letters plus two signs, Ъ and Ь.
Agree on a list of categories, such as animals or cities, then start a round. Everyone writes one answer per category that begins with the letter before the timer runs out. The letter round timer avoids repeating a letter until every letter has been used.
Very few common words begin with these letters, so rounds with them can be frustrating. Skip hard removes all six, leaving 20 letters. You can also type your own list into Exclude letters, separated by spaces or commas, or run together like QXZ.
Yes. Choose Hindi (Devanagari) to draw from the 11 vowels (स्वर) and 33 consonants (व्यंजन), shown with their romanised sound. An option adds अं, अः and the conjuncts क्ष, त्र and ज्ञ that many school charts include. Hindi has no upper or lower case, so the Case setting is hidden.
The modern Greek alphabet has 24 letters, from alpha (Α α) to omega (Ω ω). The Russian alphabet has 33 letters, including Ё, the hard sign Ъ and the soft sign Ь. Both have upper and lower case, which you can choose in the Case setting.
Random letters alone make weak passwords. For a password, use a dedicated password generator that mixes upper and lower case letters, digits and symbols and makes it at least 12 to 16 characters long. This tool is best for games, teaching and test data.
Your settings and last 30 draws are saved in your browser's local storage so they are there next time. They are not uploaded anywhere. Use Clear in the History panel to delete them, or clear your browser's site data. The letter round timer keeps its round length and sound setting too.
