About this tool
Half-yearly Kerala professional tax for panchayat, municipality and corporation slabs, with the annual total and payroll split.
The Professional Tax Calculator Kerala works out Kerala profession tax for each half year — 1 April to 30 September and 1 October to 31 March — by placing your half-yearly income on the nine-band slab used by grama panchayats, municipalities and corporations, then adds the two halves into an annual figure and a per-month payroll split. Kerala is unusual in that the tax is levied by the local body rather than a state department, under section 204 of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994 and section 245 of the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994, and the slab is identical for all three body types. It is aimed at salaried employees checking a payslip deduction and at payroll staff sizing the half-yearly remittance.
Open Professional Tax Calculator Kerala on AltFTool — it loads instantly in your browser.
Enter Monthly gross pay (INR) and choose the Collecting local body — Grama panchayat, Municipality or Municipal corporation.
Set Months worked Apr-Sep (0-6) and Months worked Oct-Mar (0-6), add any Bonus / arrears against the half it was received in, and pick a Marginal income-tax rate for relief such as 20% + cess.
Read Professional tax for the full year, the Half-year detail table with its If split monthly column, and Net cost after tax relief, then press Copy result.
Set the months worked in each half separately, from 0 to 6, so a mid-year joiner or leaver is placed on the slab their actual half-year income reaches.
Arrears and bonuses are entered against the half they were received in, which is what decides the slab, rather than being spread across the year.
Enter your marginal income-tax rate and it reports the net cost, since profession tax paid is deductible from salary income.
It runs from Rs 120 to Rs 1,250 per half year across nine slabs, based on income for that half year. Half-yearly income below Rs 12,000 pays nothing; Rs 12,000-17,999 pays Rs 120, and Rs 1,25,000 and above pays the top rate of Rs 1,250.
Rs 2,500 per person per year. Article 276(2) of the Constitution of India caps profession tax at that figure, which is exactly why Kerala's top band is Rs 1,250 per half year — two halves at the maximum reach the ceiling and no more.
No. All three use the same nine-band slab; only the local body you pay changes — a grama panchayat collects under section 204 of the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, while municipalities and corporations collect under section 245 of the Kerala Municipality Act, 1994.
The liability is half-yearly, for the periods 1 April to 30 September and 1 October to 31 March, though employers commonly deduct a sixth of it each month and remit at the end of the half. The per-month figure shown here is that convenience split, not a separate legal obligation. This is general information — confirm your own filing and remittance dates with your local body or a tax professional.
