A mulch quantity calculator multiplies bed area by mulch depth to give the volume you need, then converts it into bags, cubic yards, cubic metres and litres. It is aimed at gardeners and landscapers deciding between stacked bags and a loose bulk load. Extension services recommend 5–10 cm (2–4 in) of organic mulch on beds, and the calculator uses that depth as the driver of the whole result.

About 50 cubic feet, or 1.85 cubic yards, at a 3-inch depth — that is 25 bags of 2 cu ft. At a 2-inch depth the same bed needs roughly 33 cubic feet, or 17 bags.
One cubic yard covers 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, and 324 sq ft at a 1-inch top-up. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so coverage is simply 27 divided by the depth in feet.
Two to four inches (5–10 cm) for most beds. Less than two inches lets weeds through; more than four can keep water and air from reaching roots, and mulch piled against trunks encourages rot.
Roughly 300 kg (about 600–700 lb) for air-dry shredded bark, using a working density near 400 kg per cubic metre. A soaked load can weigh double that, which matters for trailer and barrow limits.
