Microwave litres is cavity volume, and this selector sizes it two ways at once: a food-volume model (a base allowance for the type — 12 L solo, 14 L grill, 18 L convection — plus 3 L per person and 6 L if you bake full cakes) and a physical check that your widest dish clears the turntable with 20 mm to spare. Whichever demands more wins, which is why a 32 cm thali can force a bigger microwave than a family of four otherwise needs. It also picks the type: solo for reheating, grill for browning, convection for baking.

About 25 litres for reheating and defrosting, or 28-30 litres if you want convection baking and roasting. Below 23 litres a family-size casserole starts to be a squeeze, and above 32 litres you are mainly paying for baking headroom.
Yes for reheating, warming milk and defrosting — two people need roughly 18 litres of cavity in a solo model. Step up to 25 litres if either of you plans to bake, because a convection fan and rack take space a solo cavity does not have to give up.
Solo heats with microwaves only, so it reheats and defrosts but cannot brown. Grill adds a heating element on top for kebabs, toast and browning. Convection adds a fan and heater so it works as a small oven and can bake cakes and roast, which is why it needs the largest cavity of the three.
Compare the dish diameter with the turntable, not with the litres. A turntable needs roughly 2 cm more than the dish so the plate can rotate without catching the walls — a 25 L model's 288 mm turntable takes a dish up to about 26 cm, while a 32 cm thali needs the 345 mm plate found on 32 L and larger models. Flatbed models without a turntable avoid the problem entirely.
