How to Calculate Your Life Path Number
Your life path number is the central figure in numerology, worked out from your full date of birth. The calculation takes a minute with pen and paper, but there are a few rules that trip people up, especially around master numbers. Different sources sometimes give different answers for the same date because they add the digits in a different order.
This guide shows the method our calculator uses, with two worked examples, and also covers the birthday number and the personal year. Numerology is a tradition, not a science: it cannot describe your character or predict events. Many people still enjoy it as a prompt for reflection.

The method in four steps
First, write your birth date as three parts: month, day and year. Second, reduce each part on its own by adding its digits until you reach a single digit, but stop if you reach 11, 22 or 33. Third, add the three reduced parts together. Fourth, reduce that total in the same way, again keeping 11, 22 or 33 if they appear.
Reducing means adding digits together. For example 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11, which is a master number, so you keep it. 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
Worked example: 29 November 1987
The month is November, the 11th month. 11 is a master number, so it stays 11. The day is 29, and 2 + 9 = 11, another master number, so it also stays 11. The year is 1987, and 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7.
Now add the three parts: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29. Reduce the total: 2 + 9 = 11. Because 11 is a master number, the life path is 11, not 2.
Worked example: 4 July 1990
The month is July, the 7th month, so it is 7. The day is 4. The year is 1990: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
Add the parts: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12. Reduce: 1 + 2 = 3. The life path for 4 July 1990 is 3. You can enter either date in the calculator to check the same answer comes out.
Why reduce separately, and the common mistakes
Many numerologists reduce month, day and year separately so that master numbers inside the date are not lost. Take 1 January 1980. Reduced separately it is 1 + 1 + 9 (from 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18, then 1 + 8) = 11, a master number. Adding every digit in one line instead gives 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 20, then 2. The method changes the answer, and that is the main reason two websites can disagree.
The most common mistakes are reducing 11, 22 or 33 when they should be kept, using the day-month order for the month part, and adding the full year 1987 as a number rather than its digits. Also make sure you use your full four-digit birth year.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are treated as heightened versions of 2, 4 and 6. Some readers describe a master number life path with the qualities of both, for example 11 and 2 together.
Birthday number and personal year
Your birthday number is simply the day of the month, reduced. Someone born on the 29th has birthday number 11, and someone born on the 4th has birthday number 4.
The personal year describes the theme of a single calendar year. Add your birth month reduced, your birth day reduced and the current year reduced, then reduce again to a single digit. For 4 July 1990 in 2026: the month is 7, the day is 4, and 2026 gives 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1. So 7 + 4 + 1 = 12, and 1 + 2 = 3, a personal year 3. Personal years run in a cycle of 1 to 9, so they are reduced to a single digit.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my life path number?
Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits separately, keeping 11, 22 and 33. Add the three results and reduce the total in the same way. For 4 July 1990 that is 7 + 4 + 1 = 12, which reduces to 3.
What are master numbers?
In numerology 11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers and are not reduced further. They are seen as more intense forms of 2, 4 and 6. If one appears in a part of your date or in the final total, you keep it.
Why do different calculators give different life path numbers?
Because they reduce in a different order. Adding every digit at once can lose a master number that reducing month, day and year separately would keep. Our calculator uses the separate method, which is the most widely taught.
Is 29 November 1987 a life path 11 or 2?
Using the separate method it is 11. November is 11, the 29th reduces to 11, and 1987 reduces to 7. Then 11 + 11 + 7 = 29, which reduces to 11, a master number.
What is a personal year number?
It is a number for a single calendar year, made from your birth month and day plus the current year, all reduced and added, then reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. It is meant to suggest a theme for that year.
Is numerology scientifically proven?
No. There is no scientific evidence that numbers from a birth date describe personality or predict the future. Numerology is a cultural and spiritual tradition, and it is best enjoyed as a reflective exercise.
