About 50 to 100 a day for an adult scalp. With roughly 100,000 hairs on the head, 100 a day is about 0.1% — and because hairs are replaced continuously, that rate does not thin the hair.
Because a hair that has finished its cycle stays trapped among the others until something dislodges it. If you wash every fourth day, that wash releases four days of shedding at once, so a count of 250 after four dry days is about 62 a day — inside the normal range. Judge the average over the period, not the peak.
Book an appointment if shedding stays above about 100 a day for more than a few weeks, if your parting is widening or you can see scalp through the hair, if the loss is patchy or circular, or if there is scalp pain, scaling or scarring. Several common causes — thyroid disease, iron deficiency, and medication side effects — are identifiable on simple tests and treatable.
That delay is the signature of telogen effluvium. A shock such as high fever, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or severe stress pushes an unusually large share of follicles into the resting phase at once, and those hairs are only released about two to three months later. It is usually self-limiting and settles within about six months once the trigger has passed, but persistent or worsening shedding should be assessed.
