About this tool
Estimate calories burned during a grocery trip, including walking, trolley time, carrying bags, stairs, and unpacking.
This calculator breaks a grocery trip into its four real activities — the walk to the shop, time in the aisles, the walk home under load and putting the shopping away — and prices each at its own published MET value using kcal/min = MET x 3.5 x kg / 200. Food shopping with or without a trolley is listed at 2.3 METs, walking while carrying about 7 kg is 5.0 METs, and carrying shopping upstairs is 7.5 METs, so the carrying stages dominate a trip that looks mostly sedentary. It also reports how many of those minutes reach the 3.0 MET moderate-intensity threshold.

The walk, the aisles, the loaded walk home and the unpacking are never lumped into one figure.
Choose from 2.0 to 3.5 mph and the outbound walk uses the matching compendium walking MET value.
Separates the minutes at 3.0 METs and above, which are the ones that count toward activity guidelines.
Around 130 kcal for a 45-minute trip if you drive and only walk the aisles, rising to about 260 kcal for a 62-minute trip on foot with bags at 70 kg body weight. The difference comes almost entirely from the walk home under load, which is rated 5.0 METs against 2.3 METs for browsing.
Only as light activity. Food shopping with or without a trolley is listed at 2.3 METs, below the 3.0 MET threshold for moderate intensity, so aisle time does not count toward the 150 weekly moderate-intensity minutes even though it adds to daily energy expenditure.
Yes. Walking while carrying a load of about 15 lb is rated 5.0 METs, compared with 3.5 METs for walking the same 3.0 mph pace unloaded, so the load adds roughly 40 percent to the burn rate for that stretch.
About 9.2 kcal a minute for a 70 kg adult, because carrying groceries upstairs is rated 7.5 METs — the highest-intensity part of a normal shopping trip and the only part that reaches the vigorous band at 6.0 METs and above.
