The Four Line Notebook Sheet Generator rules printable handwriting paper to millimetre band heights you choose: a four line sheet with ascender, x-height and descender bands, a three line sheet, a two line sheet, or plain single-line paper. It calculates the row pitch as band height plus row gap, then divides the usable page height by that pitch to tell you exactly how many rows fit on A4, A5, Letter or Legal before you print. Frequently asked questions
What is four line paper used for?
It teaches letter proportion. The middle band holds small letters like a, c and e, tall letters such as b, d and l rise into the top band, and the tails of g, p and y drop into the bottom band. Indian primary schools use it through the early English writing years.
What band height should I use for each class?
Larger bands for younger writers: roughly a 12 mm middle band for nursery and LKG, 10 mm for UKG and Class 1, 8 mm for Classes 2–3 and 6 mm for Classes 4–5. These are practical suggestions — if the school prescribes a notebook, measure that ruling and match it.
How far apart are the lines on ruled notebook paper?
Commercial single-line paper comes in three standard rulings: wide rule at 11/32 inch (8.73 mm), college rule at 9/32 inch (7.14 mm) and narrow rule at 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). Wide rule is normal for primary school, college rule for older students.
Why do my printed lines come out smaller than the millimetres shown?
Almost always because the print dialog is scaling the page. Set scale to 100% and turn off “fit to page” or “shrink oversized pages”, then measure a band on the printed sheet with a ruler to confirm it matches the figure on screen.
