Set up HDMI, optical, or headset audio output correctly
Xbox routes audio differently depending on whether it's going to a TV's built-in speakers, a soundbar or AV receiver over HDMI/optical, or a headset plugged into the controller — and picking the wrong format is the single most common cause of "no sound" or distorted audio after setting up a new console or display.
What you should know
- Go to Settings → General → Volume & audio output to choose the HDMI audio format: Stereo Uncompressed for TV speakers, or Dolby Digital 5.1 / Bitstream out for a receiver or soundbar that decodes surround sound itself.
- For an optical (TOSLINK) connection, set the output to a compressed format like Dolby Digital, since optical cannot carry uncompressed PCM surround sound.
- Under Headset audio, adjust the Game/Chat volume balance slider and mic monitoring level independently from TV volume.
- Use "Test audio output" in the same menu to confirm sound is reaching the correct device before assuming a hardware fault.
Why it matters
A mismatched audio format is a leading cause of silent or crackling audio after connecting a new TV, soundbar, or receiver, and an unbalanced game/chat mix is one of the most common headset complaints — both are fixed in software, not by replacing hardware.
Best practices
- Start with "Stereo Uncompressed" when troubleshooting a no-sound issue, then step up to Dolby formats only once basic audio is confirmed working.
- Re-run the audio test after connecting any new display or sound device — formats don't always carry over correctly through HDMI switches or older receivers.
- Keep chat volume slightly below game volume as a baseline, then adjust per-game since default mixes vary by title.
Common problems and fixes
- No sound after connecting a new TV or soundbar
- Reset the HDMI audio format back to Stereo Uncompressed, confirm the correct HDMI input is selected on the TV/receiver, then re-select the surround format if supported.
- Chat is too quiet or too loud compared to game audio
- Open Settings → General → Volume & audio output and adjust the dedicated Game/Chat balance slider — this is separate from the console's overall volume.
Tips and tricks
- Dolby Atmos for headphones is a one-time purchase (with a free trial) from the Microsoft Store — it's separate from Dolby Atmos for home theater, which works with a compatible AV receiver instead.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no sound over my optical cable?
Optical (TOSLINK) can't carry uncompressed PCM surround sound — set the output format to a compressed option like "Bitstream out (Dolby)" or "Dolby Digital 5.1" instead of PCM.
