Set up fast, secure biometric sign-in

Windows Hello lets you unlock a tablet with your face (via an infrared camera) or fingerprint instead of typing a password every time — faster on a touchscreen device where typing a long password is awkward, and more secure than a simple PIN alone.

What you should know

  • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  • You'll be asked to set up a PIN first if you haven't already — Windows Hello biometrics require a PIN as a fallback.
  • Select Facial recognition (Windows Hello) if your tablet has an IR camera, and follow the on-screen scan; you can add an alternate appearance (e.g., with glasses) afterward.
  • Select Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) if your device has a fingerprint reader, and register multiple fingers for reliability.
  • Under Sign-in options > Additional settings, choose whether Windows requires sign-in again after sleep, which matters more on a tablet that's frequently picked up and put down.

Windows Hello face and fingerprint data is stored and matched locally on the device — it's never uploaded to Microsoft or usable to sign in on another device.

Why it matters

On a tablet, entering a password on a touch keyboard is one of the more friction-heavy interactions in the whole OS. Windows Hello removes that friction on every wake and every app or purchase confirmation that asks you to re-authenticate, while still being backed by a required PIN if biometrics ever fail.

Best practices

  • Register more than one finger or set up an alternate facial appearance so a bandage, glasses, or lighting change doesn't lock you out of biometric sign-in.
  • Keep the fallback PIN memorable but not trivial — it's the real backstop if biometrics ever fail to recognize you.
  • Clean the IR camera or fingerprint sensor area periodically, since dust or screen protectors near the sensor are a common cause of failed scans.

Common problems and fixes

Facial recognition stops working after a Windows update
Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Facial recognition and select Remove, then set it up again — this re-links the biometric driver after some update-related driver changes.
Fingerprint reader isn't recognized at all
Check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for a fingerprint driver update, since the reader firmware sometimes updates separately from the base OS.

Tips and tricks

  • Enable Dynamic lock under Sign-in options to automatically lock the tablet when a paired Bluetooth phone moves out of range, adding an extra layer of physical security.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone unlock my tablet with a photo of my face?

No — Windows Hello facial recognition uses infrared depth data specifically to prevent photos or video from being used to spoof sign-in.
