Sign in with your Microsoft account and manage OneDrive backup
Signing in with a Microsoft account links settings, app licenses, and files across devices, and enables OneDrive to back up your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders — useful on a tablet with limited local storage.
What you should know
- Check your sign-in status under Settings > Accounts > Your info; select Sign in with a Microsoft account instead if you're on a local account.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup to enable syncing of apps, preferences, and credentials to your Microsoft account.
- Open the OneDrive app from the system tray, go to Help & Settings > Settings > Backup > Manage backup to choose which folders sync automatically.
- Enable Files On-Demand under the OneDrive Settings tab so files show up without consuming local storage until you open them — important on tablets with smaller SSDs.
- Review Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts if you also connect a separate Outlook or work/school account for Mail and Calendar.
Files On-Demand placeholders still need an internet connection to open; mark folders you'll need offline as Always keep on this device before a flight or trip.
Why it matters
A tablet is more likely than a desktop to have limited local storage and to move between locations without a reliable backup routine — OneDrive sync tied to your Microsoft account is what protects your files if the device is lost, damaged, or needs a reset.
Best practices
- Turn on Files On-Demand to keep your full OneDrive library visible without filling up limited tablet storage.
- Mark documents you need for offline travel as Always keep on this device before you lose connectivity.
- Use Settings > Accounts > Windows backup so a new or reset device restores your layout and app list automatically.
Common problems and fixes
- OneDrive shows a sync error icon and stops updating
- Open the OneDrive tray icon, select the affected file for the specific error, and use Settings > Account > Unlink this PC then relink if the issue persists.
- Local storage fills up despite OneDrive being enabled
- Confirm Files On-Demand is turned on under OneDrive Settings > Settings tab — without it, every synced file is stored fully on the device.
Tips and tricks
- Right-click any OneDrive folder and choose Free up space to convert locally-stored files back into online-only placeholders without deleting them.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my files if I switch to a local account?
Files already synced to OneDrive stay in the cloud, but automatic backup of Desktop, Documents, and Pictures stops until you sign back in with a Microsoft account.

- Storage SenseMany Windows tablets ship with smaller SSDs than laptops or desktops. Storage Sense automatically clears temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin on a schedule, and can convert unused local OneDrive files to online-only to keep the device from filling up.
- Wi-Fi & Network ConnectionsWindows 11 tablets rely on Wi-Fi for nearly everything since most don't have an Ethernet port. Managing known networks, metered connection settings, and Airplane mode correctly avoids both connectivity drops and unexpected data usage on cellular-equipped models.
