Automatically free up space on limited tablet storage
Many Windows tablets ship with smaller SSDs than laptops or desktops. Storage Sense automatically clears temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin on a schedule, and can convert unused local OneDrive files to online-only to keep the device from filling up.
What you should know
- Go to Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense.
- Select Configure Storage Sense or run it now to set how often it runs — Every day, Every week, or Every month.
- Set a schedule for deleting files in the Recycle Bin (for example, after 14 or 30 days) and files in the Downloads folder that haven't been opened in a while.
- Enable the option to make OneDrive files that haven't been opened for a set number of days online-only, which frees local space without deleting the files.
- Use the Storage breakdown on the same page to see which categories (Apps, Temporary files, System) are using the most space before deciding what to clean up manually.
Why it matters
Running low on storage on a tablet blocks Windows updates, app installs, and even camera use, and it's often caused by silently accumulating temp files and installer leftovers rather than anything the user actively saved. Storage Sense handles that cleanup automatically instead of requiring manual maintenance.
Best practices
- Set Storage Sense to run weekly rather than monthly if you regularly download large files like videos or installers.
- Combine Storage Sense with OneDrive Files On-Demand for the biggest space savings on smaller tablet drives.
- Check the Storage breakdown before assuming you need more storage — Temporary files and old Windows update leftovers are often the real culprit.
Common problems and fixes
- Storage still full after running Storage Sense
- Check Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files manually and clear Windows Update Cleanup and Previous Windows installation files, which Storage Sense doesn't always remove aggressively.
- Recently used files disappear from local storage unexpectedly
- Adjust the OneDrive online-only threshold in Storage Sense to a longer time period so actively used files aren't converted prematurely.
Tips and tricks
- Select Run Storage Sense now from the Configure page for an immediate cleanup instead of waiting for the next scheduled run before a big update install.
Frequently asked questions
Will Storage Sense delete files I've never backed up?
It targets temporary files, Recycle Bin contents, and old Downloads by default — it won't touch files in Documents or Desktop unless you specifically configure it to convert already-synced OneDrive copies to online-only.
