Set up voice commands with Google Assistant on your watch

Google Assistant on Wear OS handles voice commands, quick replies, and hands-free actions like setting timers or checking the weather, and can run either on-watch (with Wi-Fi/cellular or a paired phone connection) depending on the request.

What you should know

  • Press and hold the side button, or say "Hey Google" if voice detection is enabled, to launch the Assistant.
  • Enable or disable hands-free "Hey Google" detection under Settings → Personalization → Voice Match & Hey Google.
  • Choose which app opens for messaging replies under Settings → Apps → Default apps → Assistant app.
  • Assistant works over the watch's own Wi-Fi/cellular connection when out of Bluetooth range, so responses keep working away from the phone on connected models.

Why it matters

Voice commands are the fastest input method on a screen this small — being able to set a timer, reply to a text, or check the weather without tapping through menus is one of the clearest advantages a watch has over pulling out a phone.

Best practices

  • Enable "Hey Google" detection only if you want always-listening convenience — it does use a small amount of extra battery for the wake-word listener.
  • Speak close to the watch's built-in microphone rather than shouting from a distance; accuracy drops sharply with distance and wind noise.
  • Keep the watch's microphone permission granted for the Assistant app under Settings → Apps if voice commands stop responding after an update.

Common problems and fixes

"Hey Google" doesn't wake the Assistant
Re-enable Voice Match under Settings → Personalization, and re-train the wake-word model if it was recently reset by a factory reset or major update.
Assistant responds with "Can't connect right now"
Check the watch's own network status — on non-cellular models, Assistant needs either an active Bluetooth link to the phone or the watch's own Wi-Fi to reach Google's servers.

Tips and tricks

  • Assistant can control smart home devices directly from the watch if they're already linked to the same Google account used to pair the watch.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Assistant work without the phone nearby?

Yes on Wi-Fi or LTE watches, as long as the watch itself has a network connection — Bluetooth-only models need the paired phone in range.
