Choose whether the top row defaults to F-keys or media/system shortcuts
Many keyboards share the top row between standard function keys (F1-F12) and secondary media or system controls (volume, brightness, playback), toggled with an Fn key or a dedicated Fn Lock. Which one is the default without holding Fn is configurable on most models.
What you should know
- Press Fn + Esc (or a dedicated lock key, often showing a small padlock over "Fn" or "F-Lock") to toggle Fn Lock, which swaps the default behavior of the top row between F-keys and media keys.
- On keyboards with a companion app, the default top-row behavior is often also settable per-application, overriding the physical Fn Lock state when that app is focused.
- macOS: System Settings → Keyboard → toggle "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" to flip the same default at the OS level for Apple and Apple-compatible keyboards.
- Windows: on most third-party keyboards this behavior lives entirely in keyboard firmware or the companion app rather than a Windows setting, since Windows doesn't have a native equivalent toggle.
Why it matters
Software that relies on F-key shortcuts (like F5 to refresh, or F-keys in creative and development tools) breaks unexpectedly if the top row is defaulting to media controls instead, and this is one of the most common "my function keys stopped working" support questions — it's almost always the Fn Lock state, not a hardware fault.
Best practices
- If you regularly use F-key shortcuts in professional software, set F-keys as the default and reach for Fn plus a key on the rare occasions you need media controls, rather than the reverse.
- Check the companion app's per-application override list if function keys work in some programs but not others on the same keyboard.
- Label or remember your keyboard's current Fn Lock state visually (many keyboards light an LED when it's active) to avoid repeatedly toggling it by accident.
Common problems and fixes
- Pressing F1-F12 changes volume or brightness instead of triggering the app shortcut
- Toggle Fn Lock (Fn + Esc or the dedicated lock key) to switch the top row's default back to standard function keys.
- Media keys stopped working after a firmware or driver update
- Reinstall or update the manufacturer's companion app, since media key mapping is often handled in software rather than purely in keyboard firmware.
Tips and tricks
- On keyboards without a physical Fn Lock key, holding Fn alone (rather than toggling) temporarily reverses whichever default is currently set — useful for one-off use without changing the lock state.
Frequently asked questions
Why do F1-F12 work fine on one computer but default to media keys on another?
Fn Lock state is usually stored on the keyboard itself, but some multi-device keyboards apply a separate default per paired connection slot, so the same physical toggle can appear different depending on which device is active.

- Remap Keys & Create Custom ShortcutsMost keyboards with a companion app allow remapping any key to a different keystroke, a launched application, a system action, or a recorded multi-step macro, with the configuration saved either to the app's software profile or the keyboard's own onboard memory.
- Switch a Keyboard Between Multiple DevicesMany keyboards support pairing to two or three devices simultaneously, typically over separate Bluetooth channels selected with numbered switch keys, letting one physical keyboard control a laptop, desktop, and tablet without repeating the pairing process each time.
