Set Up Find My on iPhone

Find My helps you locate a lost or stolen iPhone on a map, remotely play a sound, mark it as lost, or erase it, and it can also share your location with family members or locate AirTags and other Apple accessories.

How to open Find My

  1. Open Settings → [Your Name] → Find My.
  2. Turn on 'Find My iPhone' and 'Find My Network'.
  3. Enable 'Send Last Location' to report a final position before the battery dies.
  4. Open the Find My app on another Apple device to view the location of your iPhone if it's ever missing.

What you should know

  • Find My iPhone must be turned on for the device to appear on a map if it's ever lost or stolen.
  • 'Send Last Location' automatically sends the device's final known location to Apple when the battery gets critically low.
  • Find My Network lets a lost device (or a paired AirTag) be located using nearby Apple devices, even without its own Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
  • Family Sharing members can optionally share their location with each other directly from the Find My app.

Activation Lock, tied to Find My, requires your Apple Account password to erase or reactivate the device — turn off Find My before trading in or selling your iPhone to avoid blocking the new owner's setup.

Why it matters

Find My is the single most effective built-in protection against a lost or stolen iPhone becoming a total loss, since it lets you locate, remotely lock, or erase the device before someone else can access your data. Activation Lock, which is tied directly to Find My, also makes a stolen iPhone far less valuable to resell, since it can't be reactivated without your Apple Account credentials. Beyond device recovery, Find My underpins family location sharing and AirTag tracking, making it one of the most functionally important privacy and security settings on the entire device.

Best practices

  • Keep Find My iPhone turned on at all times, since it's one of the few settings that directly protects the value and data security of the device itself.
  • Enable 'Send Last Location' so a dying battery doesn't erase your last chance at locating a missing iPhone.
  • Turn off Find My and sign out of your Apple Account before selling, trading in, or giving away your iPhone, to avoid leaving Activation Lock enabled for the new owner.
  • Use 'Notify When Left Behind' for tracked items like AirTags paired with Find My, so you're alerted before walking away without them.

Common problems and fixes

A trade-in or new owner can't activate the iPhone after a factory reset
The previous owner needs to sign in to icloud.com/find or another device and remove the iPhone from their account to clear Activation Lock.
Find My shows an old or inaccurate location for a lost device
Check whether 'Send Last Location' was enabled and whether the device had a recent connection before the battery died, since Find My can only show the most recent location it received.
Find My iPhone can't be turned off during a reset
Enter your Apple Account password when prompted, since disabling Find My intentionally requires authentication to prevent a thief from doing the same thing.
A family member's location isn't showing up in the Find My app
Confirm they've accepted the Family Sharing invitation and enabled location sharing from their own device's Find My settings, since sharing must be turned on individually by each person.

Tips and tricks

  • Use 'Play Sound' in the Find My app to locate a misplaced iPhone that's still nearby, like lost somewhere in your own home.
  • Check the Find My app's 'Devices' tab for a full list of every Apple device and accessory linked to your Apple Account, not just your current iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Can a thief turn off Find My on my stolen iPhone?

Not without your Apple Account password — Activation Lock requires those credentials to disable Find My or erase the device, which is what makes stolen iPhones difficult to resell.

Does Find My work if my iPhone is off or out of battery?

If 'Send Last Location' was enabled, Find My can show its final known position before it powered off; some newer iPhones can also be located for a short time even after shutting down using low-power hardware.

Can I use Find My to track an AirTag or someone else's Apple device?

You can track your own AirTags and devices, or another person's device only if they've explicitly shared their location with you through Family Sharing or a similar sharing feature.
