Reprogram the Action Button shortcut
On iPhone 15 Pro and later, the Action Button replaces the mute switch and can be assigned to trigger Silent Mode, Camera, Flashlight, a Shortcut, Accessibility features, and more with a press-and-hold.
How to open Action Button
- Open Settings and tap Action Button.
- Swipe left or right through the available actions.
- Tap any action that offers further options, like choosing a specific Shortcut.
- Press and hold the physical Action Button to test the new assignment.
What you should know
- Configured in Settings > Action Button with a horizontal swipe picker to choose the assigned action.
- Default assignment is Silent Mode, mirroring the switch it replaced.
- Can trigger any personal Shortcut, enabling custom multi-step automations.
- Some actions, like Translate or Magnifier, support additional sub-options once selected.
Only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and later Pro models; standard models still use the physical mute switch.
Why it matters
The Action Button turns a single physical press into a personal shortcut to whatever a user does most often, whether that's silencing the phone before a meeting, jumping straight into the camera to catch a moment, or running a multi-step Shortcut automation. Because it replaces a switch people already reach for by muscle memory, its customization has an outsized effect on how quickly someone can perform their most common action without unlocking the phone or hunting through Control Center. It's one of the clearest examples of iOS personalization extending to hardware, not just software.
Best practices
- Assign the action that would otherwise take the most taps to reach, such as a frequently used Shortcut.
- Reassign it temporarily for specific contexts, like Flashlight while traveling or camping.
- Test the press-and-hold duration in a low-stakes moment so it becomes reliable muscle memory.
Common problems and fixes
- The button doesn't seem to do anything.
- It requires a firm press-and-hold, not a quick tap; a haptic pulse confirms activation.
- A Shortcut assigned to the button no longer runs.
- Open Settings > Action Button and reselect the Shortcut, since it can become unlinked if the Shortcut was deleted and recreated.
- Silent Mode behavior changed after reassigning the button.
- Once reassigned away from Silent Mode, ringer control moves to Control Center or the Sound & Haptics settings.
Tips and tricks
- Assign it to a Shortcut that shows a menu of several actions to effectively multiply its functionality.
- Use the Accessibility assignment to instantly toggle features like VoiceOver or Magnifier in a pinch.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Action Button have more than one function?
