FAQ & Help
Help for the AltFTool Settings & Support centre: find a setting, fix a common problem, check your device, or get in touch.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Settings & Support help center?
It is a free library of step-by-step guides for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS settings, plus guides for devices such as AirPods, Apple Watch, game consoles, TVs and accessories. Each guide explains where the setting lives, why it matters, best practices and fixes for common problems. The guides show you how to change a setting; nothing on this site changes your device for you.
How does search work?
Type in the search box at the top of any page, or press the / key to jump to it. Results match the title, summary and description of the guides for the platform you are viewing. If the same words appear in guides for other platforms or devices, those are listed underneath so you can open them directly.
Why am I seeing settings for a different operating system?
The help center reads your browser's user agent to guess your operating system and shows that platform first. You can switch to Windows, macOS, Android or iOS at any time with the platform picker; your choice is remembered in this browser until you reset it. Opening a link to another platform's guide switches the view to that platform automatically.
What does the "Open this setting" button do?
On Windows guides the button uses an ms-settings: link, which opens the matching page of the Windows Settings app directly. Other guides open the official support page for that setting (for example Apple, Google or Microsoft documentation) in a new tab.
Why doesn't the Open setting link work on my device?
ms-settings: links are understood only by Windows. If you are reading a Windows guide on a Mac, phone or tablet, the button shows a notice instead of trying to open it. Follow the numbered steps in the guide on the Windows PC itself, or switch to the guide for the device you are using.
Where are my bookmarks and recently viewed guides stored?
Bookmarks (the star on a guide), your recently viewed guides, your chosen platform and your reading preferences are saved in this browser's local storage. They are not sent to AltFTool or synced to an account, so they will not appear in another browser or device, and clearing your browser data removes them.
Do the device info and diagnostics tools send my data anywhere?
No. The Device Info & Diagnostics page reads details your browser already exposes, such as browser name, screen and window size, language and whether you are online, and runs its checks locally in your browser. The results are shown only to you and are not uploaded.
How do I report a mistake in a guide or ask for a new one?
Use the Contact page to tell us which guide is wrong or what is missing, including the platform and version you are using. To suggest a new guide or tool, use the Request a Tool page. Both are linked from the Contact & Feedback help page.
Are the guides official Microsoft, Apple or Google documentation?
No. They are independent guides written by AltFTool. Menu names can differ between versions and manufacturers, so where a guide links to official documentation, treat that page as the final word for your exact model and software version.
