Tune alert volume, haptic strength, and silent mode

Sound & Haptics settings control how loud alerts play, how strong the Taptic Engine's tap feels, and whether the watch stays silent. These are available both on the watch and in the Watch app.

What you should know

  • The Alert Volume slider controls speaker loudness for calls and alert sounds.
  • Haptic Strength adjusts how firm the tap feels for notifications, and Prominent Haptic adds extra taps for better perceptibility.
  • Silent Mode mutes alert sounds while keeping haptic taps active; Mute toggles via Control Center or the side button depending on model.

Why it matters

Getting haptics right matters most for accessibility and discretion — a stronger haptic helps you notice alerts during exercise, while silent mode with haptics keeps the watch unobtrusive in meetings.

Best practices

  • Enable Prominent Haptic if you often miss taps during workouts or in noisy environments.
  • Use Silent Mode instead of fully disabling notifications so you still feel important alerts.

Common problems and fixes

Watch is unexpectedly silent
Check Silent Mode isn't enabled — swipe up to open Control Center and look for the bell icon indicating mute is on.
Haptic taps feel too weak or go unnoticed
Increase Haptic Strength in Settings → Sound & Haptics, and enable Prominent Haptic for stronger double-taps.

Tips and tricks

  • Turn the Digital Crown to adjust Alert Volume quickly from the Sound & Haptics screen without using a slider.

Frequently asked questions

Does Silent Mode turn off haptic taps too?

No — Silent Mode only mutes sounds; haptic taps still play unless haptics are separately disabled.
