Free up space and manage what's stored on the tablet
Storage settings break down space used by apps, media, and system files, and include a Smart/Storage cleanup tool that identifies unused files, duplicate images, and large downloads.
What you should know
- Found under Settings > Battery and device care > Storage (One UI) or Settings > Storage on stock Android.
- Tap Clean now (or Free up space) to run an automatic scan for cache files, unused apps, and duplicate downloads.
- Tap Apps within Storage settings to sort installed apps by size and clear cache or data for individual ones.
- Some tablets support a microSD card or USB-C drive under Settings > Storage > Portable storage for expanding capacity beyond internal storage.
- Google Photos and Files by Google can both be set to auto-delete already-backed-up items once local storage runs low.
Clearing an app's "Data" (not just cache) deletes that app's saved logins, game progress, and local files — only cache clearing is fully safe to do routinely.
Why it matters
Running low on storage slows the whole system down, can block app and OS updates from installing, and risks photos or downloads failing to save at the worst moment.
Best practices
- Keep at least 10-15% of total storage free for smooth performance and to leave room for OS updates.
- Clear app cache periodically for heavy apps like browsers and social media, which can silently accumulate several gigabytes.
- Move large media files to cloud storage or an external drive rather than letting Downloads grow unmanaged.
Common problems and fixes
- Storage fills up quickly despite few apps installed
- Check Settings > Storage > Apps sorted by size — a browser or messaging app's cache is often the largest unexpected consumer.
- "Storage space running out" notification won't go away
- Run Settings > Battery and device care > Storage > Clean now, then manually delete large files under Downloads and empty the Trash in Google Photos.
Tips and tricks
- Files by Google's "Clean" tab surfaces old screenshots, duplicate files, and large videos in one list, which is often faster than digging through Storage settings app-by-app.
Frequently asked questions
Does a microSD card let me install apps to it?
On tablets that support Adoptable Storage, yes, some apps can be moved; otherwise a microSD card is generally limited to media and file storage only.
